I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify the student's weak area and to prioritize the student's needs first. The tutor lessons are most effective when tutors are following the student's need and helping the students to improve on their weak area. I am approachable: I can get along with the student fairly soon…

To provide them with skills and the confidence to apply their knowledge independently, essentially becoming the guide on the side, rather than having to lead them each step of the task/problem. - Can easily build a rapport with students, allowing them to be at ease in asking for help or further clarification of a topic - Can differentiate…

Be there for them all the time. If they're at home and I'm not there being able to send me a message for help is the best thing a tutor can do for a student I'm often relatable to most people and therefore they get the most out of…

The most important thing a tutor can do is listen. Asking someone to describe their thoughts whilst tackling an issue gives you all the information you need to know in addressing certain aspects and improving their method. I believe I am skilled at taking complex processes and reducing them to basic steps which are more easily approachable. I am…

I'm an excellent communicator. 7 years of primary school teaching experience has enabled me to build strong rapport with students in a short space of time. Inside CurlewisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student in Curlewis worked on indices and applying index laws to simplify expressions.

Year 10 student focused on completing the square and factorising quadratic equations, using structured practice questions for each method.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student investigated linear associations by solving equations of least squares lines and interpreting both slope and intercept in real data contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Specialist Maths, one student hesitated to trust her own answers, often second-guessing herself on integration and trigonometric problems. As a tutor noted, "she usually knows exactly what to do, but worries about getting it right." This self-doubt slowed progress during practice tests.

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to bring her calculator and books home, which meant she couldn't review classwork fully or tackle Pythagoras questions confidently.

In a Year 10 session, over-reliance on mental calculations led to avoidable mistakes—especially when working through multi-step algebra tasks without showing working.

Recent Achievements

One Curlewis tutor noticed a real shift in Zac, a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to work independently; after some guided practice, he began tackling exercises on his own without prompting.

In senior maths, Marissa made noticeable progress recalling exact trigonometric values—she'd struggled before but now answered sin and cos questions perfectly and could explain her reasoning out loud.

For a younger student in Year 4, subtraction had been slow going last term, but this week she worked through multi-step problems much faster and started checking her answers by herself at the end of each worksheet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Drysdale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wallington Primary School.
