Listen to feedback. Make sure they understand what they are being taught and determine if a new approach is needed. Sometimes the same information can be summarised and presented in a different way that is just easier for some people to understand. My own capacity for learning. Information retention and comprehensive analysis. Communication…

While I believe it is obviously important to help a student learn and understand their chosen subject, it is also important to support and encourage confidence in a student. I found during my schooling years that the subjects I most succeeded in were ones where my teachers were kind and encouraging - it allowed me to feel comfortable to ask…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is foster an excitement about the learning process. A good tutor can help a student to achieve not only their language goals but to appreciate how important language is to their overall academic achievement. My strengths as a tutor revolve around my communicative style of teaching/tutoring. I'm…

While results may be important, I believe the most important part is instilling knowledge in a way that builds a students confidence so that they can become self-reliant and effective learners. As a tutor, i believe my strengths are my patience and my ability to effectively communicate with students to beat support each one individually. This has…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only instruct, but listen. Tutoring is a beneficial one on one experience, therefore tutoring has opportunities to become specialised for the students benefit. This can be achieved with asking questions such as “How is this content relevant to the student?†or “Does the…

In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. As we have all heard: give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. :)…

The most important things a tutor can do are to listen to their students and respond accordingly when tutoring them. It is also important to encourage their abilities and help them to succeed. A tutor should also be there to encourage continuous learning and creating a positive learning environment. I believe my strengths as a tutor are working…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I always felt inspired to study after my sessions with…

A tutor should be able to convince a student that they are good enough regardless of their level of achievement. I believe my biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to ensure that the student and I are both on the same page with the students understanding of the topic and moving forward…

The most important thing will be to help the student find his/her interest in the subject. If they don't believe they can do it or that what they're learning is actually beneficial, they're only ever going to treat it as something they have to do. It'll be difficult for them to reach their potential in the subject. My strengths would be ability to…

Communication and trying to understand the way they learn. I think each person learns differently and we must be able to adapt the technical knowledge and provide them with the problem solving skills themselves to be able to answer questions. We found Anthony to be an excellent tutor. He was very friendly and helpful, even sending through an exercise for Anna to do after I told him we would not be continuing.

Inside DarraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Asher practised working with ratios and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000, as well as performing division that results in answers to two decimal places.

In Year 9, Mia focused on solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, alongside revising probability concepts through practical examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam tackled quadratic equations by learning how to factorise using the complete-the-square method and interpreted piecewise functions by sketching graphs and discussing their domains.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often attempted to sketch graphs in her head rather than working through the process on paper; as a tutor observed, "she finds herself trying to draw the graph in her head instead of organising her thoughts on paper," which led to avoidable inaccuracies.

In senior Chemistry, one student repeatedly left homework incomplete and rarely reviewed key definitions or formulas between lessons—this resulted in forgetting crucial terms like "dissociation" and confusion over when to apply certain calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner's unorganised approach meant regularly misplacing notes and missing due dates, causing last-minute stress before assignments.

Recent Achievements

One Darra tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate when tackling algebraic application questions now independently applies the product-sum method to factorise even trickier expressions—last session, she finished a challenging set without asking for hints.

In senior chemistry, another high schooler who previously mixed up stoichiometry steps is now confidently balancing complex equations and distinguishing between mono- and diprotic acids on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often guessed at word problems has begun pausing to draw diagrams first; last week, he set up his distance–time equation himself before checking with the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
