I believe a tutor should always be able to accommodate to the students' circumstances when helping them learn something new. Many tutors are often high-scoring students, while many students will be those struggling. This leads to some tutors not being considerate enough of the students' lack of prior knowledge and understanding. It is the tutor's…

With this approach, a student can see one topic in more different way and learn more and more. The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In addition to this, having a practical approach other than the traditional teaching style is…

I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

On a surface level outlook a tutor is just meant to teach their students and be on their way. But in my perspective, there is more to it than just teaching. A tutor is about being a capable mentor that identifies the student's weaknesses in class and mentally so there is always something the student can work upon both academically and mentally.…

The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. Motivation instills a passion, may it be for the subject taught or the anything beyond school hours, it gives the student a sense of purpose and drives the student to be ambitious. The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

A tutor should be able to inspire a student. By giving knowledge, a tutor should not just make a student achieve a higher grade. Instead, I believe that a tutor should inspire students, stimulate their brains, challenge them and also spark curiosity. This way, a student will have natural interest towards the subject and will be motivated to learn…

The most important role of a tutor is to equip students with the critical thinking skills and study habits they need to eventually learn independently, rather than simply feeding them the answers. To achieve this, a tutor must create a safe, encouraging space where making mistakes is viewed as a necessary and valuable part of the learning process.…

I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. In my opinion, the most important thing, that a tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Inside DeepdeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Bob worked through a summary of key Year 7 Maths concepts to identify strengths and areas needing support, including integers and angles from the start of the Year 8 syllabus.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons focused on quadratic equations—specifically factorising using grouping methods and the null factor law—and also included expanding expressions and solving equations.

Another high schooler tackled statistics by reviewing standard deviation calculations and working through their school's statistics worksheet for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, a student was observed struggling to apply prime factorisation in square root problems during a practice test; skipping written steps made errors harder to catch.

In VCE Maths Methods, another arrived without their CAS calculator or workbook, which slowed progress on calculus tasks and left them less able to ask targeted questions.

For a Year 10 algebra lesson, messy working and missing units led to incorrect answers that were difficult to trace—one tutor noted, "they didn't label their answers or show clear reasoning." These habits caused confusion and wasted time revisiting old ground instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Deepdene tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to skip over tricky problems, but now shows their working step-by-step and checks each answer for accuracy.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them actively ask questions instead of staying silent when confused—something they'd avoided before—and even correct their own mistakes without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised their tutor by solving money word problems independently after struggling with basic addition just weeks earlier.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Good Counsel School.
