Encouraging unmotivated students and helping them increase their grade significantly. A tutor's job is to also ensure that a student is well prepared before any examination. I use different methods of communication and practice questions to ensure the student understands the topic. In some cases, i developed worksheets and mock exams to help…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. From my previous experience, one of the most important things I have learned about students is that some of them are just afraid of asking questions because they think that their questions are stupid or their questions do not matter. If the tutor cannot be patient with the…

For me, I consider giving them the knowledge and confidence to be able to step out of their comfort zone to achieve something previously unachievable the most important thing. Sometimes, a tutor is a guiding mentor, you provide them with stories, knowledge and experience. Then, the student would be able to utilize that knowledge and build a good…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inculcate self-discipline, curiosity and initiative. These characteristics will offer the student the necessary tools he / she needs to succeed in his / her academics in a manner that is more sustainable than mere "motivation." I am able to connect the topic with things that are relevant…

Setting high expectations from the students, giving as many practice questions as possible and communicate effectively are the most important things I consider, a tutor can do for a student. The way I teach i.e. from the basics, help students to learn the concepts clearly and confidence to solve higher level problems. Additionally, I hold great…

I set up goals by coming up with strategies for individual sections, and giving students ways to measure how well they’re implementing the strategy. Implementing these strategies successfully on homework is a short-term goal, on practice tests are intermediate goals, and on their live exam is a long-term goal. It is fine if students are slow to…

I think a tutor's main responsibility is to teach students the methods of learning and to enlighten their curiosity to new things rather than spoon feeding them with knowledge besides answering their questions and giving them assignments. Helping a student to learn independently and to seek answers by themselves is far more important than…

Firstly, I feel a tutor should make a student feel comfortable and trusted such that the latter never hesitates to ask a question and clear his/her doubts. Also, a student should feel that the tutor is genuinely interested in his/her progress and thus, I feel a student remains motivated and does his/her best. I believe that I have the patience and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build both understanding and confidence in a student. While improving academic performance is important, students learn best when they feel supported and capable. A good tutor should explain concepts clearly, adapt to each student’s learning style, and create a safe environment where…

Make the student love the subject. There are many ways varying from a student to the other. If a student falls in love with the subject, he will comprehend it, not just learn it. Strongly understanding their strengths and skills inside and out so that tutors can tailor and adapt to their situations. An example is having the student to solve a question but verbally share his/her thought processes to see if the approach requires improvement e.g does he/she think of drawing a diagram or remembering an equation/rule first?…

Ease their anxiety. Time spent on understanding. (Process is more important than the result) Giving them the tools to fish than rather the fish itself. Showing them stress doesn’t solve problems, making an effort does. There is nothing you can’t do. One day these things will help you. Make them realise their potential. Patience…

A tutor can encourage a student to better themselves, to reach simple goals and then challenge them further to be the best. I feel achieved when the student starts asking complex question as the day passes by, to the point where you have to give the answer a second thought. A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. To develop critical thinking and a problem solving attitude in a student so that they can themselves breakdown a complex question into easier, doable sections to reach to the solution. This will help the student to clarify their concepts without the tutor directly providing them with the solution but instead leading them through a simplified…

We are very impressed with Abitha & her approach in tutoring Capri. Already Capri is showing signs of more confidence & less anxiety with her maths.
Skye, Denistone

Inside DenistoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Amber focused on loans and annuities, including using loan repayment tables and completing worked examples from Chapter 4.

Year 10 student tackled trigonometry topics such as sine and cosine rules, bearings, and obtuse angles, with practice using past HSC questions to reinforce understanding.

For a primary example, Year 5 student Zeke worked through addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators and mixed numerals, along with worded problems involving algebra.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a student reviewing trigonometry and algebra tended to "guess what to do" instead of clearly writing out each step—this often led to confusion when checking answers later.

Another senior student in Year 12 focused on practicing familiar topics for HSC revision but avoided more challenging chapters, making it harder to identify weak areas before exams.

For a Year 8 student, inconsistent attention to decimal places and significant figures meant calculator errors crept into assessment tasks.

As noted by one tutor, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," causing small issues to snowball during tests.

Recent Achievements

One Denistone tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle tricky bearings questions; after some targeted practice, she began recognising patterns and could now approach difficult exam-style problems with more independence.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who used to rush through homework without checking is now consistently completing assignments carefully and making far fewer errors.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once struggled with times tables has recently mastered both the 4's and 5's and was able to recite them fluently during the lesson without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Therese's Catholic Primary School.
