I think there are severals things that a teacher can do for students such as prepare easy academic curriculum so that students can understand the solution easily. Moreover, this helps them to solve the jumbled problem in easy way. Secondly, the tutor needs to maintain proper flow of communication with the students this helps them to freely ask the…

I think that the most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is to inspire them to seek further knowledge in all areas of life. I have personally had tutors that have still affected me to this day, not only for the lessons they taught but also for the way that they have encouraged and inspired me to achieve my personal goals. I am very…

A tutor has the ability to lend a comforting ear to the student away from the classroom. A tutor can lift a students morale by providing a safe space outside the classroom where they can voice their academic concerns. In essence an effective tutor means undivided attention to cater for a students well being. I am result oriented. I am an active…

My goal as a tutor is to assist students in achieving their academic goals and guiding them through academic difficulties. When you can see how your efforts helped enhance a learner's grade on a test or report, it's supremely satisfying. Through teaching, I've learned how to be myself. I enjoy teaching because your students want to feel as though…

Giving them time to understand something is important. Being patient with children is very necessary. Fear is the worst relationship a tutor and student can have. Being a student myself, I can recall most of the academics I've learnt over the past few years. I can easily mingle with kids, this being my major strength, it becomes easier for me to…

As a tutor, I consider providing all my best for the students as the most important thing. Whilst the student requires good teaching skills, they also require an individual to rely on for encouragement and support, I want to embody this and be this individual for them to help assist with their learning actively. I believe that a tutor should always be ready to listen to a student and be ready to help using all the resources available to them. As all students learn at different pace, a tutor should keep that in mind and plan lessons according to the student rather than going at the same speed for everyone. Another important thing a tutor can do for a…

The most important things are building confidence and making the student feel safe to make mistakes. A lot of students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they're afraid to get things wrong. Beyond that, I think a good tutor listens first understanding exactly where the student is confused before jumping into an explanation.…

Inside DerrimutTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emma revised quadratic equations and functions, focusing on graph interpretation and problem-solving; Year 10 student Lucas tackled trigonometry by graphing sine and cosine functions, along with a review of transformations to strengthen his foundation; meanwhile, Year 3 student Zoe practiced multiplication facts and solved word problems involving money using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, one student was "a bit lax with her homework," leading to missed practice on application questions and slower progress in trigonometry graphing.

In a senior English session, skipping questions when unsure meant some tasks were left incomplete and unattempted until prompted.

A Year 5 learner's written work was described as "hard to follow," with untidy layout making it difficult to check for errors—especially in multi-step problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly avoided challenging multiplication questions, returning only to familiar material and requiring frequent reminders to persist when tasks became unfamiliar or effortful.

Recent Achievements

One Derrimut tutor noted a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess at problems but now regularly asks for help when stuck, especially during complex homework—she completed nearly all tasks this week and initiated questions on her own.

A high schooler in Year 9 has started challenging herself by choosing harder questions for practice, getting them right on recent assignments after previously sticking only to basics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recite times tables can now confidently recall them aloud without prompting and tackled double-digit multiplication with less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Derrimut Primary School.
