I believe that a tutor shouldn't be perceived as a strictly authoritative figure - keeping the student engaged and building a strong relationship is a vital component in the effectiveness of the tutoring. Students - myself included - gain much more knowledge when lessons are more flexible. It usually takes me a few sessions to understand a…

The most important thing to me is the ability of a tutor to care for and listen to a student. The needs of a students is usually known by the student and is always important to not assume what the student needs but pay attention and listen to them. My strengths include being patient and altering my teaching style to suit the learning style of a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster independent thinking, and make learning feel achievable. It’s not just about explaining the content — it’s about creating a space where students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and grow. A good tutor helps students develop the…

I think a really good tutor pays attention to what the student is struggling with and will focus on that topic or subject. It’s really important to target the areas you find the least enjoyable as they are the ones you’re most likely to lose marks on. I also think amazing tutors actually care about their students’ results and that is…

I see students as a clay model, which consists of different minerals and when it is subjected to appropriate pressure and temperature together with proper guidance and methods, it converts into a masterpiece ceramic. Being a tutor is like being their (students) second parent. So I can assure 100% guidance towards their study plan. Help them in…

As a tutor, I believe that the most important thing I can bring to a student is a different perspective on the subject matter they are studying. While teachers and textbooks can be great resources, they often present the material in a standardized and one-size-fits-all way that may not resonate with every student. By providing a different voice…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to create an environment in which they feel supported and welcomed. It is key to achieving results that you build a strong rapport with your student. If they feel judged by you and thus do not ask the questions they need to ask, it can stagnate their progress and damage their…

The tutor must be able to eliminate every question or doubt a student has on a subject or concept and enable the student to comprehend the information not just for scoring grades, but, for understanding and using the information in any scenario which requires it. Hence, the tutor must be able to inculcate this idea in the student and facilitate…

The tutor can change the life of a student. A tutor is like a mentor for any student. Teacher teach concepts but the tutor makes sure that the student understands how to apply that concept. The most important thing a tutor can do is create an environment in which the student feels comfortable asking questions and encouraging them to work hard and commit to learning. Teach them how to think independently, and provide them with a way of thinking efficiently. Math is not a discipline in which someone does enough problems and can solve all the problems, but a discipline that requires people to constantly think about questions. So if one only knows to let students do lots of problems then he might not be a good…

In my perspective mathematics is all about practice, understanding concepts and master them. Tutor's job is to make students understand the concepts but at the same time, they should not spoon feed them by constraining them to certain important questions only! Student should be able to do all types of questions and apply the concepts in daily life…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be empathetic. As much as a tutor can do, they could not change how their students are. Inside DicksonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Owen focused on algebraic techniques and revising for a test on networks and graph theory, working through assigned school problems and discussing weighted graphs.

In Year 9, Isla spent her lesson reviewing probability concepts like conditional probability using classic real-world scenarios, then practiced with venn diagrams and tree diagrams to prepare for an upcoming assessment.

For primary, Year 5 student Rhys drilled surface area and volume formulas for 3D shapes using flashcards, then addressed mistakes from his recent test by practicing fraction operations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, one student repeatedly needed reminders to recall the basics of reactions (e.g., hydrogen and oxygen forming H₂O), revealing weak retention due to not keeping a science notes book.

Another in Year 9 Mathematics depended heavily on solution formulas and struggled when asked to solve x + x = 6 without reference materials—needs to write working out down, as noted.

In Year 8 Probability, forgetting or confusing algebraic rules made rearranging P(A) + P(not A) = 1 difficult, causing uncertainty mid-question.

These habits led to lost confidence and time spent searching for forgotten facts instead of building deeper understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dickson noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle algebraic expressions now working through expanding brackets and factoring with much less prompting, even recalling the process after just one reminder.

In senior chemistry, another high schooler answered questions on chemical bonding independently—last term, he needed step-by-step help for similar problems.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to guess quietly during reading tasks now speaks up confidently to offer answers and has started reading new passages out loud without waiting for encouragement.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dickson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Daramalan College.
