Being confident in their ability to learn is important because without it, students won't believe in themselves and won't put the effort to learn. I achieve this by creating a supportive environment during class as well as providing lots of active recall which give quick feedback and helps students learn. I can tell when students don't fully…

A tutor should focus more on the foundation of the student and focus more on the basics of the subject. Also, corelating the subject with real-life examples could make learning easier and more interesting. I believe I have the right amount of patience required to tutor students. Also, I am open to interactive methods of tutoring and try to be…

Take time. If a tutor is rushing it all on to them its not benifiting the tutor nor the student. Even if it takes more time for a student to grasp a concept, its better to take more time than assume the student can do it. My communication and ability to explain things in detail in a way that can hopefully get across to the student, helping them…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is improve the way in which they think about things. Whilst tutoring is catered to individual subjects, I believe a tutor can offer more than just skills in Maths or English - they can offer advice in general that can be applied to other academics and life as a whole. When a…

The ability to garner a student's trust as someone they can rely on to help guide them through difficult subjects, as well as the patience and willingness to adapt to the needs of different students, as everyone has different methods of learning. I think there are two main things a tutor can do for a student; maintain high grades and garner a positive attitude. It is imperative as a tutor's job to help the student maintain or achieve high grades in the particular area of study. However, high academic standards are not simply enough. It is also important for a tutor to build up an…

Being open with students, sharing each and every thing i know, let students do mistakes because this is how they learn. Making mistakes make you realise where you are going wrong. The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

For me i guess a tutor is not just there to teach a simple or complex topic from a specific subject but a tutor can be helpful in guiding what career a student can opt and values like respect for elders and for their own self which i guess are way more important in life than any subject or topic. My strength is that i encourage students to learn a…

A good teacher can make a good difference in a student's life. A tutor can also give good guidance to the student, letting them aware of the good and bad things about life. A teacher not only teaches a subject to the student but also builds a certain part of the student's character. A teacher also builds a student's future, if a student is…

To be there to support the student academically and psychologically. This enables me to assist them on their journey of growing up, helping them with their study and listen to their struggles if they are…

Inside DonvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zac focused on building confidence with reading the time and practising times tables alongside single-digit addition.

For Year 9, Carla tackled challenging coordinate geometry questions from her holiday homework and solved literal equations to prepare for class.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben worked through exam-style questions on solving exponential, quadratic, and linear equations, as well as using the discriminant to determine solution numbers and reviewing differentiation basics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided creating personal notes on cellular respiration and the light-dependent reactions, relying instead on memorisation without deeper processing—Brielle needs to go back and memorise some steps…and create her own notes.

In Year 10 Maths, another student hesitated to continue working through algebraic rearrangement if unsure, stopping mid-problem rather than persisting: She would be going in the right direction but stop because she does not know what the next step is.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly forgot times tables practice homework. These habits led to incomplete revision, loss of momentum, or gaps that reappeared in later tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Donvale tutor noticed a big shift in Phoebe (Year 10), who previously hesitated with index laws—now she tackles complex algebraic expressions using these rules and recently completed a mini informal test on her own, applying old knowledge to new problems.

Carla (Year 11) used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, but after mastering the substitution method, she now moves through related questions independently without needing prompts.

In primary sessions, Scarlett has gone from mixing up place values to confidently identifying numbers and counting money correctly; last week she added up $5 and $10 notes without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Pines School.
