For the student to be able to see me as someone he/she can rely upon. I say this because I was not very good at mathematics but when I had a tutor at the start of year 8, she was always friendly and made it very easy to talk to her. It was because of her that I now want to be a tutor, she instilled disciplines which I am proud of today, while…

Support. Providing a great amount of support and motivation is crucial for a student’s education path. Without this, a lack of drive would occur which is detrimental to their learning, ultimately affecting their peers around them which acts like the domino effect. I have been to multiple coaching centres since Kindergarten and I have realised…

I believe the most important things as a tutor include: - developing children's love for learning, - building their inquisitive nature, - being able to teach the content according to the needs and learning style of the students, - developing a love for reading, and - listening to, and understanding the students' concerns and guiding them…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be open and offer an open exchange of exchange of information that allows a student to freely delve into a subject. I feel tutors better excel at this compared to teachers who's depth and exploration of a topic can be shallow due to the rigorous nature of the syllabus. My strengths would be gentle…

It's the capacity to come up with new approaches to assist your kids in learning. Students learn in different ways and at varying speeds. As a student, I expect my teachers to explain things in a way that I can grasp. Unlike my university instructors, who simply read the slides and call it a class. NO! I don't teach that manner, and I don't…

I think that a very important aspect of tutoring is the individual attention that it provides the student with, which would not always be possible in a school setting. As tutors work closely with the student, they are also aware of the student's thinking style and capacities, and can therefore tailor their own teaching style. Furthermore, most…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to realise when a student actually understands a topic, or if they need more help. Too often students will say that they understand but they don't want to admit they still don't. The tutor should be able to break down a subject in multiple ways, and choose which way fits particular students' learning…

The most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is to make him understand the concept instead of just showing him how to solve the problems. Inside DoonsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia practised solving one-step algebraic equations and explored angles through targeted problem sets.

For Year 10, Daniel worked on trigonometry, including applications of the cosine rule, as well as financial mathematics involving interest calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya focused on HSC revision using past papers, tackling advanced algebra, geometry problems, and consolidating her understanding of measurement concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often checked answers only after finishing all questions, rather than step-by-step—mistakes sometimes went unnoticed until the very end, as one tutor observed during algebra tasks.

In Year 11 mathematics, revision focused mainly on familiar types, avoiding more difficult or unfamiliar problems from recent HSC practice papers.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner skipped writing out working in multi-step word problems, which made it hard to trace errors and slowed improvement when reviewing with feedback. This approach left gaps unaddressed and made exam preparation feel overwhelming as deadlines approached.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Doonside recently saw a Year 11 student, who used to get stuck on multi-step trigonometry problems, now confidently apply the sine and cosine rules to solve them without prompting.

In a Year 9 session, a student who often rushed through algebra questions is now taking time to connect concepts together and learn from mistakes between lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has started attempting worded maths problems independently instead of waiting for hints—she finished her latest worksheet by applying skills she'd learned in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Doonside Public School.
