A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student is make themselves alaways available to help their student, whether it is a full lesson or just a quick question over the phone, just being a constant support to the student is of such high value. Another important thing a tutor can do, is alter their teaching for each student. Everyone…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is concentrate on their needs. The student already has teachers at school who teach the class broadly, irrespective of a particular student's strength or weaknesses. A tutor must listen to what the student struggles with, and assist them with that area. A tutor can also be the most encouraging…

For smaller children, it is important that education is intesresting, entertaining to them, so the motivation for studying, learning content comes naturally and from their own. For older children, it is more important for tutors to reach out and ask the students what they don't understand or are not clear about. Targeting weak areas and fixing the…

Understanding each student's unique learning style, strengths, and areas of improvement allows tutors to adapt their teaching methods and materials accordingly. By addressing specific needs, tutors can help students grasp difficult concepts and progress at their own pace. I…

Helping students build confidence is arguably the most important and beneficial thing a tutor can do. I firmly believe that confidence is the building block of success, and that, by bringing it out of a student, a tutor can unlock the student's full potential, and empower them to expand their skills and capabilities. Volunteering as an instructor…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

I think the most important thing s tutor can do for a student is explain the content well allowing for them to understand. This means not handing the answers to them on a silver platter, I believe that doing this has no help to the students. In order to be an efficient Tudor one must go through all the steps of the content. I like to think that I…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. I think the most important thing is to simply be there for a student, ensure their learning environment feels safe. From there on, explanations & clarifications make their entrance. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging and have faith in the student. There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for a tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most important…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are inspire and impart. Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
