Where a classroom environment may not fully satisfy the student's individual needs and accomodate their personal learning style, a tutor can offer tailored support that more effectively addresses their gaps in understanding. The tutor can: equip the student with strategies for solving problems on their own; promote critical thinking, teach…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to set the student up for success outside of the scheduled tutoring hours. Only so much can be achieved in the allotted tutoring sessions, therefore it is of utmost importance that the student leaves each tutoring session with a clear direction on what to study and how to effectively study…

As a tutor is paid to improve a student's grades and so that's the underlying aim. But what a tutor should really do is teach a student how to learn better and improve. That means reminding them to proofread, read the criteria sheet before and after researching, and set up study plans that work with them (if that's palm cards, end of the week…

Teach them that true knowledge comes in understanding concepts and how they apply in real life, not just memorisation of assessed components. Knowledge becomes much more appealing and simple when you understand why you need it. I am very good at teaching maths concepts and chemistry specififically. Generally I feel I am good at understanding my…

Guiding them - not just in academics, but in other parts of life too. Making sure we're there for the student when they need it most is probably the most important part of the job. I make sure all my students understand the topic fully and completely before moving on, and am willing to wait and guide them patiently until they do so. I am not…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to raise the confidence of the student to enjoy learning rather than stressing on the competition and grades. Most importantly i consider communication is the best strength of a tutor to communicate each student in his/her comfort zone. This not only boost the confidence of the student but also helps…

Software Dev Tutor Ellen Grove, QLD
I think providing valuable insights and preparation is one thing, but having a set out progression plan for them is the best way to ensure success for the student. We can't squeeze a whole chapter or page worth of content in one or two sessions but we can tailor it better. I'm a great communicator and I know that sounds very generic but I can…

Inside DrewvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Zoe worked on linear equations, focusing on rearranging formulae and revising key algebra fundamentals, before being introduced to probability concepts.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled derivatives—both from first principles and using standard rules—and began applying these skills to physics assignments.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya focused on bivariate data analysis for her maths assignment, including drafting conclusions from scatter graphs and interpreting real-world correlations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on algebra often left steps unwritten, making it hard for the teacher to spot errors—"writing down steps and working out clearly for teacher to mark" was flagged as a next step.

In Year 12 Physics assignments, drafts were submitted with incomplete analysis sections; despite feedback, some written parts remained underdeveloped.

A Year 8 student arrived late to several lessons, losing valuable time and momentum ("came 10 minutes late for tutoring but spent 1 hour and 20 mins on lesson").

For one Year 11 Maths Methods student, not recalling previously learned rules slowed progress in revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Drewvale tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with calculus concepts, now applies derivative rules independently to exam problems with much less prompting than before.

In a separate high school session, another student took feedback from their last chemistry assignment and made clear improvements—this time handing in a draft that needed far fewer corrections.

Meanwhile, during a Year 4 lesson, a student who previously hesitated to ask for help began raising her hand when stuck instead of guessing silently, which let her finish all her times tables exercises without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan West Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Stretton State College.
