I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should not only help students answer specific questions, but also guide them in developing problem-solving skills and effective ways of thinking. Listening carefully, identifying gaps in understanding, and adapting…

Different students have different learning techniques, in that sense I think a teacher should describe a topic multiple times along with different ways to solve the same problem. And, I always keep in mind that everyone's understanding is not same and do not have the same mind set for learning the subjects. As a tutor, I believe I have the enough…

I believe a tutor can impact student's lives by providing the foundation he needs for further studies. A student with a poor concept might some how pass but he will struggle in the future, or looses interest in that subject. Hence a tutor can strengthen that foundation, at the same time be a source of motivation and a be a big brother. My main…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to be a reliable guide to the students. Every students has their own way of learning and pace of learning. I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

I believe following up with students is the best way to create accountability and instil a routine in them. Also, tutors who put in effort after hours, such as staying back to help or creating personalised tasks to target their weak areas, are critical for students to excel in their studies. As a previously tutored student, I can guarantee that…

I believe my most important role as a tutor is provide a supportive environment in a way that it is open to a variety of personalities and ways of thinking. The most important thing I can do is continuously adapt to a student’s evolving learning needs. A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

Local Reviews

Tutoring commenced as planned in Week 1 of Term 4. I was satisfied with the tutor after interviewing her - I have considerable relevant experience, as a sometime academic & subsequently a senior official, then the principal of a boutique consulting business. More importantly, my Year 9 Selective daughter learnt very quickly from the tutor, whom she respects & likes, coming to understand Trigonometry at last in the first hourly session. After just four of these she is on her way back to where she should be in Maths. In primary school she always came 2nd in her year to a Mathematics genius. In high school she has been held back by personal issues & poor teaching, with only her Year 8 teacher being of any quality. It is wonderful to see her enjoying her Maths again. I look forward o reading her report in a few weeks.
Robert, Dulwich Hill

Inside Dulwich HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Liam focused on addition and subtraction, using number lines and equality statements to strengthen basic arithmetic.

In Year 10, Emily worked through algebraic skills like adding like terms and solving equations involving addition, subtraction, and division.

For Year 11, Jack concentrated on vectors—covering vector addition, subtraction, and constructing diagrams to support understanding of proofs.

Recent Challenges

Homework was often incomplete, limiting their chance to consolidate algebra and coordinate geometry skills outside class.

In Year 11 mathematics, messy working—such as omitting equal signs or cramming steps—made it harder to spot where sign errors occurred; one tutor remarked, "writing numbers neatly and keeping numerators and denominators together would help."

A Year 4 student sometimes avoided starting subtraction tasks if they seemed too hard, guessing instead of writing out attempts.

After setbacks in senior physics, a student lost motivation and hesitated to use feedback or textbook worked examples for revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dulwich Hill tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to skip steps in algebra is now writing out all workings and diagrams neatly, which has led to fewer errors.

In Year 11 maths, Annabelle previously struggled to choose the right trigonometric function but now reliably identifies when to use sin, cos, or tan without prompting.

Meanwhile, during a primary session, Zoe—who often lost focus—settled in after some encouragement and completed her questions independently for the first time this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.
