Not just tutor them, but be a friend. By opening up and developing a closer bond to students, the students feel more comfortable and it doesn't become a tutoring session, but just a study session. I went through the course(s) myself quite recently, so I understand what's expected on the students, and what they need to do to excel and not only get…

Effective communication is essential. This includes being able to explain concepts clearly and in a way that is easy to understand and being a good listener. Additionally, the ability to empathize with students and understand their challenges and frustrations can make a big difference in how they respond to tutoring. Tutoring often involves…

The most important things is for a tutor to help a student to come to a place where they enjoy the experience of learning rather than see it as a chore. I am very good at communicating complex ideas using simple…

Be able to explain in a way that the student can understand and be able to take that knowledge outside and be able to do problems by themself with confidance in themselves. I am young and would be able to understand students on a personal level and able to explain concepts and material in a way they would be able to understand, my weaknesses would…

Other than helping a student genuinely understand the content in their course, I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for them is to help them in developing and implementing strategies to allow them to become independently successful. This may mean developing a better organisational process, implementing a system for completing tasks…

Claire is tutoring my son in year 11 maths methods and he is gaining a lot from the sessions. She is highly intelligent, concise, adaptable and friendly. Highly recommend.

Inside DurobyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Willow focused on simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions as well as converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

For Year 10, Jeremy spent sessions reviewing trigonometry concepts—like Pythagoras' Theorem—and tackling exam practice problems involving perimeter, area, and volume of shapes and prisms.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Will worked through multiplying and dividing negative numbers using the number line and explored plotting points and reflecting shapes on the Cartesian plane for his assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 maths, one student struggled to prepare for in-depth exam questions after only revising the basics, saying "I tried to prepare for the basics…wasn't prepared for the in depth exam questions." This made tackling complex problems more stressful.

In Year 8 algebra, another student avoided seeking feedback despite reminders, which slowed their progress on trickier topics.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student arrived at a session without paper for calculations—meaning an entire area topic couldn't be covered that day. Not reviewing or organising materials beforehand led to missed learning opportunities and increased frustration during lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Duroby recently noticed Jeremy becoming much more independent with algebra—he now recognizes and corrects his own mistakes, where before he relied heavily on step-by-step guidance.

Willow, also in high school, has started to tackle fraction problems with noticeably less hesitation; she's begun converting fractions herself instead of waiting for reminders about the method.

Meanwhile, Bella (Year 6) surprised her tutor by not only proofreading her own story draft for errors—a task she used to rush through—but also asking for extra homework to keep practicing her skills.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tweed Heads Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bilambil Public School.
