I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and remember that everyone learns at their own pace, in their own way. Tutors can provide practice papers, positive feedback, ways of improving to the student. The aim is to not make the student feel as if they are unable to achieve the goal, but to allow them to…

True learning happens when students build the tools to think for themselves. In my experience, the most vital role of a tutor is fostering self-efficacy through precise diagnostics and a supportive environment. Rather than just assisting with immediate coursework, I look past surface errors to pinpoint root learning gaps and adapt materials to how…

I think it is important to motivate and inspire a student to believe in their own abilities. I hope as a tutor I can instill in my students the importance of hardwork and…

Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Most of the students, do not feel very confident in their own understanding of the subject and hesitate to participate in class discussions. I believe by making the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. To reveal the simple nature of (what may seem) complex. Once a student understands that they have the ability to unravel something they thought was out of their reach, their confidence and newfound ability create a framework for smart study skills and eagerness to learn in the future. Those two qualities are necessary for the independent learning…

Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

Wendy, Earlwood

Inside EarlwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex worked through quadratic expressions, focusing on factorising both monic and non-monic equations using the PSF method, and practiced solving quadratics by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

For Year 7, Aimee concentrated on converting between decimals and percentages as well as reviewing mean, mode, median, and range in data sets, rounding off with division practice.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Cooper tackled converting mixed fractions to improper fractions (and vice versa), along with simplifying fractions using guided examples from class resources.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors, making it difficult to trace where calculations went wrong.

For a Year 7 assignment, forgetting the assignment sheet for geography led to confusion about requirements and incomplete planning.

A senior student working on compound interest relied heavily on calculator use without manual checking, missing conceptual understanding.

In primary-level word problems, a tendency to avoid writing full explanations meant answers lacked clarity—especially when units were omitted.

After setbacks with tricky fraction tasks in Year 6 maths, confidence dropped and revision was avoided for harder questions, slowing improvement.

Recent Achievements

One Earlwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 9 student's approach to surds: while she was hesitant to attempt questions independently at first, by the end of the session she worked through all the problems on her own and even explained her reasoning out loud.

Another high school student, previously slow with percentage change calculations, now solves them much faster and connects ideas from previous weeks without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who used to read quietly and wait for correction now reads research material aloud during sessions, double-checks his work independently, and found key information himself for an assignment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Earlwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.
