listening to students and finding out what they want out of the sessions and how they prefer to learn. By doing so we can offer a method of learning that's customized to them as an individual and not as a class. Learning occurs in many formats and a tutor should provide a format that isn't inherently applied in schools - aiding in the…

I believe, more than anything else, that a tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and trusting…

Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students. This way…

It is important that tutors take measures to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses within a subject and to ensure their advice is suited to these capabilities. Tutoring should directly meet a student's needs, rather than implementing a one size fits all approach. A tutor should also supply a student with resources and advice that will…

I believe a tutor’s most important role is to be patient and truly understand how each student learns. By breaking down concepts clearly, sharing practical strategies, and creating a supportive and encouraging environment, a tutor can help students gain confidence, retain knowledge, and genuinely enjoy the process of learning. Being Non-judgmental with a desire to help; does not make assumptions about students; treats all students as individuals who want to learn and have the ability to learn no matter what their personal background or circumstances are. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is listen to the student as much as teach them. If a student has any complaints, maybe approach the content differently, try to reach a compromise, or just find a better way to communicate that you want them to improve, and, most importantly, that they can. I have a good communication experience,…

Instead of simply teaching the concepts, a tutor should try to teach the student the logic behind the concept; he/she should try to simplify difficult concepts in a way students can grasp. Moreover, I think it's important that a tutor lets the student work on the problems first, let them brainstorm and develop their thinking skills instead of…

Inside East GeelongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Eliz revised subtraction and decimals, practised arithmetic problems, and was introduced to Roman numerals using practical examples.

For Year 8, Ava tackled Pythagoras' Theorem with visual aids and worked on unit conversions relevant to geometry topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam focused on calculus skills—differentiating functions using the chain rule and quotient rule—and applied these techniques to exam-style tangent questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was repeatedly forgetting to bring her books and calculator home, making it difficult to review progress or check homework completion. As a tutor noted, "she tends to forget to bring her school books but always has an alternative task prepared," which disrupted the session's flow and limited targeted support.

In a senior Maths lesson, another student relied too heavily on mental calculations during Pythagoras' Theorem practice; missing calculator use led to avoidable errors.

For one Year 12 learner, skipping double-checks in exam questions resulted in minor mistakes going unnoticed—extra time was then spent searching for what went wrong instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Geelong recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with tough maths problems; she now jumps into challenging questions and usually completes them with hardly any guidance.

Another high school student was excited to tell her tutor about scoring well on her Pythagoras test after working through tricky algebra together—she needed very little help this time, which was a first.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often waited for prompts has started describing pictures in English lessons without being asked, showing real independence by choosing her own words each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcomb Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's School.
