I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student is: - To guide the student to the answer not tell them - To not put pressure on the student and work at the student’s pace - To ask the students whether they have something they wish to focus on so we can hone that skill together I believe I…

A tutor should provide a student a "light-bulb" moment, where they suddenly understand a concept, gain an idea or know how to answer a question. Light-bulb moments allow students to gain confidence in the subject, and thus achieve the goal of a higher mark. I believe it is also important for tutors to provide tips for dealing with stress,…

A tutor should maintain a comfortable yet professional relationship with the students, so that they can comfortably express their opinions/questions whenever they have the need to. Also, to be able to share my experiences with the students to help them make the right choices for their future study endeavour. My strength as a tutor would definitely…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is help them understand concepts that may seem impossible to them because they can then view learning in a completely different viewpoint. This helps them have an open mind towards learning instead of viewing it as something tedious. As such, being understanding and empathetic…

A step by step technique. It is important that the student is shown the correct way to solve a problem as the student might not have understood the basics of the lesson. I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. Being a source of advice and support in a student's scholarly journey. I am approachable and non-judgemental so students can ask me for help on school topics that they may not want to ask their teachers or parents due to anxiety. I use learning styles that complement the student I am teaching, as opposed to a "one size fits all"…

A tutor can be many things for a student. Not only can they be an avenue where they can learn in a different way which may be the student's way of learning, but also they can be a mentor for them in that they can give different insights and views, as well as being someone who listen, and if wanted, suggestions and advice. I can explain concepts…

Try to help them gain a good, comprehensive understanding of concepts that they don't quite understand as at school, the teacher does not have time to individually help out every student. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to approach problems and questions on their own, such that they are not dependent on anyone when they encounter a difficult problem in the future. For example, to teach them how to look at a problem in many different ways, to reverse the problem and work…

I believe a tutor should be understanding, patient, passionate, and encouraging. I had a tutor for my HSC and I believe that to gain a strong connection with the student, you must be their biggest cheerleader. You must be there to support them through their obstacles and successes and be an ear to listen when things become overwhelming. A tutor…

Michele, Gordon

Inside East KillaraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Alice focused on financial maths and applying Pythagoras' theorem, referencing the Cambridge textbook and EUKA resources.

Year 10 student James revised algebraic techniques with indices and worked through polynomial graphing, also reviewing exponential growth and decay using practice questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student tackled definite integrals—working through areas under curves—and practiced volumes of revolution using cylindrical shells and disc methods to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student often avoided showing full working in algebra and geometry tasks—"he should elaborate a bit more on the working outs," as noted—leading to missed marks when mental steps went unrecorded.

In senior mathematics (Year 12), there was a tendency to rely heavily on notes for new topics like chain rule or integration, which slowed problem-solving and limited retention: "Requires looking at notes for now."

Across multiple grades, late arrivals and forgotten content were common, resulting in time spent catching up rather than practicing challenging applications.

When feedback was offered after complex calculus errors, corrections weren't always consistently applied in subsequent sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Killara noticed that one high school student, who previously hesitated with multi-step trigonometry questions, now confidently connects triangle sides to trig rules and solves problems without prompting.

Another senior student, after struggling with z-scores, recently tackled standard normal curve table questions on their own and quickly applied formulas for annuities and loan repayments.

In a Year 5 session, a student who used to guess when faced with fraction multiplication now pauses to convert percentages to decimals first and explains each step aloud before answering.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ku-ring-gai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Killara High School.
