Being a tutor is a very demanding position to be in as it becomes your responsibility to not only deliver the content but to make sure that it gets through to the student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to build a trust relationship so that the student feels comfortable asking if they do not understand instead…

be a mentor to their learning, not just someone who spits out knowledge but rather relates to the student and helps them in ways that don’t feel like “boring study†- ability to relate difficult concepts into easy to understand comparisons - able to make sure key information is memorised by using fun activities which make boring concepts…

The most important thing is for the tutor to engage with the student and the content in a way that is entertaining yet detailed, which allows the student to enjoy their learning. Regular monitoring of progress is also crucial to good tutoring, because it allows the tutor and student to identify where they have improved and where they need to…

Providing adequate feedback is the most important trait of a tutor. A tutor must identify key areas of weakness especially for maths. They must also show a method that can be replicated to produce the best results. I am very good at using visual aids to demonstrate new concepts to the students. I am great at boosting the student's confidence as I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is firstly enhance their knowledge. Also schools may be a great learning space, sometimes because of the amount of students in a class, it may become hard for a child to communicate and get extra help from the teacher. Thus, a tutor is able to provide this by directly helping students and…

A tutor should have the patience to teach a concept to a student and focus on practicising that concept until the student is confident in the area of study. I am kind and very patient and will not be frustrated if a student does not understand the concept the first, 2nd 3rd time. I have experience as a student of private tutoring and I understand…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is put themselves in the shoes of the student. It's very easy as a tutor to just assume your student knows a concept and continue teaching as if they know it. This happened a lot in high school, especially with maths . It's super important that the tutor first understand the level and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them fully understand the subject and its topics. Once a student properly understands the contents then they can successfully apply the right information to the questions. I can explain a concept or topic in different ways and perspective. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the needs of each student and adapt their teaching style in order to maximise the benefits that the student can get from tutoring. I've had my fair share of tutors growing up and the best tutors I've had weren't necessarily the most intelligent. They were empathetic individuals…

By understanding these circumstances, I believe a tutor should design an environment where…

A tutor can be a best friend at times. Not every time we need to make our students just do their studies. The biggest thing a tutor can contribute is his/her time. For a student getting access to his/her tutor at any time with any hurdle is the biggest thing that he/she needs. So I guess being available at all times for a student is the biggest…

A tutor can help a student to gain confidence. Usually students lose confidence and thus lose interest in a subject. Mathematics, being really important for career opportunities, is an interesting subject, we just need the right support at the right time and that's what tutors are there for. Tutors can do so much for students. To choose a few, a tutor should be honest and always try their best to educate and assist the student to their best capacity. Moreover, allowing the student to be okay with failing and making mistakes as part of the journey without feeling ashamed is critical to building their self-confidence and understanding…

Inside Eastern CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student James focused on times tables and interpreting picture graphs, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 9, Olivia worked through algebraic factorisation as well as constructing and analysing cumulative frequency tables and histograms.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ethan concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and tackled a range of worded problems from worksheets and the textbook to build confidence in applying these skills to real scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student preferred only the school's method and avoided exploring alternative approaches, which limited flexibility during problem-solving.

For a senior student tackling probability and AMC questions, over-reliance on notes was noted—"she kept referring back instead of attempting independently."

In Year 7, skipping clear layout when working through BIDMAS problems made it difficult to track errors, as observed: "structuring the working out needs work."

Meanwhile, a primary learner lost focus midway through long division worded tasks, resulting in guessed answers rather than completed reasoning.

Each scenario led to missed learning moments or repeated avoidable errors.

Recent Achievements

One Eastern Creek tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had struggled with time management finish her NAPLAN practice test independently and within the set limit for the first time.

A Year 11 maths student, previously unsure about bivariate data, worked through all questions on simultaneous equations without needing help and could clearly explain why each formula was used.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to hesitate with rounding numbers gained enough confidence after some sibling practice to teach the method back—something she'd avoided before. The session ended with her completing every rounding question correctly on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eastern Creek Public School.
