I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity and build confidence. It is crucial to break down complex ideas into manageable sections and go through these thoroughly. A tutor should also create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Beyond…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is it reduce the fear of studying/learning a subject. Mathematics is a tough subject and it is important tutors take the right approach when they teach that subject. I am a huge believer in teachers being friends with their students. My biggest strength is that I get along with students and try and…

To help them understand the concept of what they are learning. Rather than just achieving high results, helping them understand the concepts of what they are learning will aid with advancing onto more difficult studies in the future. My strengths as a tutor would be being able to explain concepts to the student at a level they can understand and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspire and motivate. While these seem like simple elements, in successfully doing so, the tutor has essentially altered the learning experiences for the student from that moment onwards. The student is then able to develop their confidence in their subjects, push to achieve their goals,…

Believing in the student and knowing them well is extremely valuable. If you are aware of a students particular learning style and their struggles and strengths then it will become easier to cater for their needs and to adjust instructional strategies to make learning more accessible. It is also important for tutors to know the content and be…

Tutors are there to motivate a student to achieve greater outcomes in life, principally in the area of academic study. Whether this is confidence, the knowledge that someone believes in them, strategies for studying and/or comprehension, through to developing initiative, self correction skills and the ability to constantly improve, tutoring is a…

I strongly believe all students learn differently and have their own unique study methods, therefore it is important for a tutor to adjust to the student's needs and personalise the study session. However, I also consider it useful that tutors help develop new study habits and introduce new ways to learn whilst tutoring in a way that the student…

What worked for me when tutoring and being tutored, was feeling safe. When a tutor creates a safe and friendly environment for their students, they will open up much quicker, and will feel safer to ask them questions. It will make tutoring feel less intimidating and more fun. I'm very friendly, and take things with a lighthearted approach, which…

Adjusting their teaching style to suit the way that student learns. Sometimes, explaining the content for a long time will work, but most of the time it doesn't. Duane is friendly, excellent at communicating with his student, and he is also punctual. Most of all, Duane has a lot of knowledge about Math. He was really able to help Arabella with her Maths questions. Also, Duane is patient with Arabella, he is able to adjust his explanation according to how Arabella will be able understand the Math problems. Nevertheless, Duane is the right tutor for Arabella. He is one of the gems in your company. In his second time coming back to tutor Arabella, we can say that we're satisfied and very happy, and he is highly recommended.

Inside Eatons HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Kiaan worked on reading comprehension and handwriting through targeted exercises, alongside practicing spelling and basic addition.

In Year 10, Jack tackled trigonometric ratios—focusing on Sine and Cosine Rule applications—and solved problems involving ambiguous cases in triangles.

For Year 12, Sarah reviewed integration techniques and their applications to displacement and velocity questions, linking calculus concepts directly to worded motion scenarios using diagrams for clarity.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Maths Methods, not bringing class notes or a notebook ("forgot for the first lesson") led to confusion during assignment work and made it harder to review mistakes.

One senior student had an incomplete practice exam before tutoring, which meant gaps weren't addressed in time for upcoming assessments.

In Year 8 algebra lessons, unclear written working made it difficult to spot where steps went wrong—"setting out and making sure their working is understandable needs improvement."

Meanwhile, a Year 2 student often guessed words instead of sounding them out, so reading accuracy didn't improve with practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Eatons Hill noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with compound interest problems now accurately remembers each part of the formula and can transfer this skill to new topics like loan repayments, showing much more independence during sessions.

Another high schooler who often relied on step-by-step help is starting to rearrange algebraic equations independently and recently completed all simultaneous equation questions on their own.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from guessing sight words to pausing, sounding them out, and reading entire pages aloud with only minimal prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albany Creek Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eatons Hill State School.
