I consider empathy and understanding as one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. When a tutor understands how the students feel, it is easier to teach them efficiently. My empathetic nature means when they are succeeding, I feel as I am succeeding too. My strengths as a tutor are my ability to cater to others needs. I am…

The tutor should be reliable, and help them unleash their potential. Students should learn that they are able to do things on their own, hence a tutor should also be encouraging. I am able to relate to the students. I can mold my way of teaching into their liking, and I am prepared. I will think of all strategies to teach them…

motivation, encouragement, and guidance. for me, tutoring is not about giving a subject material and that's it, the parents will leave with their child, therefore, you have to be trustworthy, and show them that he will be better not only as a student but also as a human. other than technical abilities, motivation and enthusiasm to the students,…

I think the key thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role, ensuring…

I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in only one…

The most important thing a tutor is about understanding as each student is different in learning and understanding the concepts. the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding. People learn at different paces and ways, you have to understand and connect with your student. Do not berate them and always encourage them. While I don't have any experience as a formal tutor, I believe you should be understanding and welcoming. By this I mean, that you should…

To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. A tutor must be patient and understanding. Every child has their own way of learning. Therefore, a tutor must distinguish the students way of absorbing techniques and information, and implement these strategies for further sessions. A tutor must be able to relate to their students. More often than not a student may not understand a task first…

Inside EdgecliffTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lily focused on fractions and circle geometry, practising calculations and using diagrams to reinforce understanding, while also revising key algebraic skills.

In Year 10, Ethan worked through logarithms and exponentials by solving equations and applying index laws to real examples.

For Year 4, Olivia concentrated on multiplication tables (2s and 3s) as well as telling the time using both written exercises and clock-based questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, messy written work and excessive crossing out made it hard to check solutions or spot where sign errors occurred—"needs to stop crossing out mistakes," noted one tutor.

A Year 12 Chemistry student hesitated when approaching back titration questions, lacking confidence in extracting key details from complex prompts.

In Year 4 maths, heavy reliance on finger counting and number charts slowed progress with addition over 10; this was especially evident without visual aids.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student reading too quickly missed crucial comprehension points in English tasks, often misinterpreting the question's requirements.

Recent Achievements

One Edgecliff tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with pH calculations now tackling multi-step problems independently and even explaining polyprotic acids in her own words.

In another high school session, a Year 10 student moved from confusion to confidently applying the quadratic formula, solving equations with minimal guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once relied heavily on counting boards surprised her tutor by checking her own work using skip-counting strategies she suggested herself—something she'd never tried before—and then finishing a missing numbers exercise entirely on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Paddington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ascham School.
