Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a strong support system so that they can confidently ask for help and not feel discouraged when they don't understand a concept. Understand the student's needs: A good tutor should take the time to understand the student's strengths, weaknesses, learning style, and goals. This helps the tutor tailor their approach to best support the student's individual needs. 1>Expertise in the subject matter: The ability to teach a subject effectively requires a deep understanding of the…

The things I consider most important for tutors are clarity, confidence, and independence. Clear explanations can turn topics that a student might shy away from into smaller ideas that they can relate to and therefore understand. Confidence grows when you celebrate small wins and frame mistakes as part of the learning process. Afterwards,…

The most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, create a safe space for questions, and teach in a way that suits their learning style. I know how competitive and burdensome academics can be, especially for students in high achieving environments ( e.g Melbourne high), so I believe being a pillar of understanding and…

A tutor can guide a student, by outlining what their goals should be at the end of the learning the subject and how to get there. A tutor can ultimately change the perception a student has of a particular subject. If the tutor can truly explain things in a good manner, a student can change from hating the subject to finding it manageable and may even start enjoying the subject. However, the most important thing a tutor can do is provide a service that is catered to the…

Inside Eltham NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jacob worked on surds and measurement problems, focusing on simplifying radicals and solving area questions.

In Year 10, Callum tackled probability using Venn diagrams and notation, as well as reviewed key class notes to strengthen understanding.

For Year 12, Sarah practiced challenging calculus integration questions from recent exam papers and revised applications of absolute value functions with graph transformations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, motivation and discipline dropped recently; as noted, "he's quite far behind class, although he's sure he can catch up." This led to incomplete homework and less effective review of hard questions.

A Year 9 student struggled with algebra practice (scoring 58%) but didn't spend time finding and fixing mistakes independently—missed opportunities for growth.

For a senior Further Maths student, notes lacked depth: "Writing notes—doesn't include thoughts or tips," so reviewing past exams felt unfamiliar despite decent summaries. When materials weren't organized, extra time was lost searching for concepts rather than strengthening understanding.

Recent Achievements

One Eltham North tutor noticed Otis, a senior student, taking real ownership of his learning—he's now making detailed notes on tricky exam questions he once avoided and using them independently when tackling similar problems.

In Year 10 maths, another student who previously hesitated to ask for help began openly discussing where he got stuck with simultaneous equations, leading him to annotate his working more carefully and finish most questions without outside prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who struggled to complete homework on time managed to review almost every exam topic ahead of schedule this week and fixed mistakes from past assignments without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eltham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eltham North Primary School.
