Really listening to the students' struggles and concerns with an open mindset and responding in an informative yet not condescending manner enables the students to learn and develop their knowledge. I would do this by listening and learning how the student learns and taking the necessary steps to help the student feel comfortable and understanding…

Its good to be able to use a formula or understand how mathematical theories work but if you do not understand the fundamental blocks of which that concept is built on you will not be getting very far. Thats why I believe in not only understanding what a formula does but why it works. My ability to find where the problem is in a student and…

I feel like encouraging them to have questions is really important. Without questions it\'s hard to know what they need help on, or what they need to improve on. So having the ability to make a good first impression, be kind and caring towards them, and able to make them feel like they can ask questions around a tutor and get help is extremely…

An important thing all tutors should do for students is to provide a sense of purpose for learning a particular topic or subject. I believe if students set out goals during their academic journey, they will be self motivated to study. I wish to believe that I can motivate students to learn while also making it as enjoyable as possible. While as a…

I think that it's important to be able to put themselves in their shoes. While the tutor completely understands what it going on, it's important to see why the student may not be understanding something, and to be able to see that makes it easier to teach and makes the student more willing to keep trying and more eager to learn. I also think…

I believe a tutor/teacher should always strive to develop an interest about subject matter in the student. Once the student does not think of the subject as burden, he will be able to learn very efficiently. Teaching at various levels has taught me to understand students from different academic backgrounds better. Every student has a different…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is teach them to feel confident and enjoy the subject they are currently struggling in. By providing this to students, you can know that the student will continue to work hard to achieve their goals, and have a positive outlook on doing work they might not have enjoyed previously. As a…

A tutor can provide much greater flexibility than a teacher in a class room setting. They can identify the specific strengths and weaknesses of a student and cater to them to make the most beneficial learning experience they can. Maths can sometimes be frustrating for students, with a lot of students often becoming convinced that maths 'isn't their thing'. A tutor should always be supportive and encouraging whatever the situation, and help bring the most out of their students' maths learning. One of my strengths as a tutor is my communication. Explaining simply the crux of…

Inside Eltham NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jacob worked on surds and measurement problems, focusing on simplifying radicals and solving area questions.

In Year 10, Callum tackled probability using Venn diagrams and notation, as well as reviewed key class notes to strengthen understanding.

For Year 12, Sarah practiced challenging calculus integration questions from recent exam papers and revised applications of absolute value functions with graph transformations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, motivation and discipline dropped recently; as noted, "he's quite far behind class, although he's sure he can catch up." This led to incomplete homework and less effective review of hard questions.

A Year 9 student struggled with algebra practice (scoring 58%) but didn't spend time finding and fixing mistakes independently—missed opportunities for growth.

For a senior Further Maths student, notes lacked depth: "Writing notes—doesn't include thoughts or tips," so reviewing past exams felt unfamiliar despite decent summaries. When materials weren't organized, extra time was lost searching for concepts rather than strengthening understanding.

Recent Achievements

One Eltham North tutor noticed Otis, a senior student, taking real ownership of his learning—he's now making detailed notes on tricky exam questions he once avoided and using them independently when tackling similar problems.

In Year 10 maths, another student who previously hesitated to ask for help began openly discussing where he got stuck with simultaneous equations, leading him to annotate his working more carefully and finish most questions without outside prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who struggled to complete homework on time managed to review almost every exam topic ahead of schedule this week and fixed mistakes from past assignments without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Eltham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eltham North Primary School.
