A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I will not be "above" them,…

I want students to feel encouraged and uplifted to learn. I mostly want too help them love learning, even though it may be difficult at times, helping them understand that it is okay to be confused and by having all these questions, it makes them a better learner. As someone who is now studying their dream degree, I want to help students achieve…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to promote understanding instead of memorizing along with building confidence with positive reinforcement and a personal level of bonding. Every student thinks and understands information and problems differently, my greatest strength is patience as I do not give up until the student gains full…

A tutor must create a friendly bond with the student so they feel free to ask anything and clear all the concepts. It's a tutor's duty to make sure that all the students are on same page at the time of lecture, involving everyone is the key requirement. I am focused as well as fin loving which can involve students in the lecture. Story making…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

I have always had a knack for providing a new and creative approach to a challenging problem. I believe that even if a child is positive they do not understand a topic, that I will be able to find a way their brain can understand it. One of my revision methods throughout year 12 was to teach my friends and family my coursework to solidify my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and understand their personality. Every kid is different and needs different types of care. Being able to identify what the kid needs help with and also compliment them for their strengths, is very crucial. I believe that a strong pursuit of mine is being able to understand…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. Patience is important for many reasons in tutoring. In my…

A tutor should recognise a person's academic abilities and enable them to succeed in achieving their best correspondingly. They are also responsible for suggesting possible ways to improve the person's study methods (e.g. visual learning, songs, or writing). I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

The most important thing a tutor can do is teach how to think, not just what to memorize. It is about building genuine confidence, breaking down mental blocks, and mentoring students on exam strategy so they eventually become entirely self-reliant. I’d say my biggest strength is making abstract concepts actually make sense. Because I regularly…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

Clarifying even the trivial of the doubts that the student possess maybe the biggest responsibility of the tutor. The tutor must assess a method to deliver the content to them. I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
