The most important things a tutor can do for a student is help inspire students to love learning, gain knowledge in various fields and learn how that knowledge can be applied in the real world, so that students gain an appreciation for education. Education is much more than just getting good grades, it is about learning how the knowledge you have…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is patience and keep great confident about your students, since sometime when they cannot understand the course materials very quickly, the tutors cannot rush them or blame them or being negative. Keep great confident for your students, trust them, and go over the materials more…

I think identifying the misunderstanding and making sure their foundation is solid. As long as they understand the content, they will be able to answer the questions! I would like to answer this question from the student’s point of view. It’s not important for the tutor to know each and everything but what is important is that if the student is unable to understand a topic and the tutor is also not aware of it, it’s his/her responsibility to give that student the assurance that he/she will try to solve it…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. A tutor must be very involved with the student's learning experience, ensuring they are comfortable and confident with the material. The tutor must also be approachable whenever the student has a query so that they can get their doubts clarified as soon as possible. A tutor should always provide real-life explanations so the student can make…

Inside EnoggeraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jake worked through calculating the area of various shapes and applying Pythagoras' theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems.

Year 8 student Emily focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic brackets, using guided examples for practice.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Lucas revised times tables for fluency and learned how to identify angles formed by parallel lines, using visual diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, as one tutor observed, she second-guessed herself with positive and negative numbers but would eventually come to the right answer, which slowed progress in algebra and created moments of hesitation.

For a Year 11 maths assignment, difficulty explaining why certain methods were used led to less detailed responses; this limited the clarity of her mathematical communication.

In Year 5, slow working speed meant more time was spent on basic calculations than tackling new material.

A lack of motivation in Year 8 science resulted in resistance toward challenging questions—"there was an evident lack of interest for the topic"—and made complex tasks feel discouraging.

Recent Achievements

One Enoggera tutor noticed a high school student who used to get stuck on algebra, but now completes most questions quickly and accurately—last session, she even expanded and simplified brackets without any help.

Another recent win came from a Year 10 lesson: after struggling with Pythagoras' Theorem for weeks, the student solved related problems independently.

Meanwhile, in a primary session, one boy who used to avoid times tables volunteered to tackle them first and got every answer right during revision.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitchelton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hillbrook Anglican School.
