The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for the students is to understand and listen to them and their needs. When a tutor listens and spends time building a relationship with his/her student, it allows the tutor to personalise the learning for the student by incorporating connections to the student's interests. In addition, it allows…

My main focus is to not just explain the content in a way they really understand the principles behind it and it would not just be memorising the content on the student's part. I also believe that connecting with the student can help the teaching learning process a lot. I am a very understanding person in general. So I am most of the time capable…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. So, I can make small but definite improvements by giving them the different levels of questions, from the lowest they can do to the level they need to achieve.…

A tutor can inspire a student to learn more and be inquisitive. Making the student ask more questions and grasp the concepts, are the major things a tutor can do for a student. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

We feel very fortunate to have been placed an excellent tutor who is not only very knowledgeable with maths but obviously passionate about his student's learning. He is also very willing to assist remotely with adhoc queries. All of this combined has definately improved our son's ability and confidence with maths as well as sparked his greater interest and enthusiasm.

Inside EvandaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Pranavi worked on converting between units of time (hours to days) and measurement (mm, cm, m), as well as practising long division with remainders.

In Year 8, Areeba tackled multiplying decimals by whole numbers and multiplying two-digit numbers using both the grid method and standard algorithms.

Meanwhile, Milly in Year 9 focused on converting fractions to decimals and percentages, along with reinforcing division skills and applying the order of operations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student in mathematics frequently got lost when translating word problems into algebraic equations, even after verbally grasping the relationship; as one tutor observed, "he understood it aloud but struggled to put the expression on paper." This hesitation to write down full working often led to misreading or skipping key question details.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner repeatedly needed reminders to line up decimals and place values correctly during arithmetic, causing persistent errors in addition and multiplication—especially with larger numbers. Both scenarios left students feeling frustrated when answers didn't match their understanding, requiring extra time for correction and prompting.

Recent Achievements

One Evandale tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get stuck on fraction homework now working through tricky questions with much less prompting, even tackling bonus problems almost independently.

In a high school science session, another student took the lead by choosing to focus on an upcoming energy assignment and showed he could explain concepts without needing as much guidance as before.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner who struggled to write out their maths process is now confidently recording each step when solving mixed-to-improper fraction conversions, making far fewer errors and finishing all set tasks during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
