The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire a student to love what they are studying and enjoy the experience of learning. Excellence will surely follow after. I was a great Maths student in high school but struggled a bit in college. This taught me the value of simplifying concepts to the most basic elements for easier…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is ensure that a student is able to have a strong conceptual foundation. I think it is also important that the tutor allows the student to learn from their mistakes and feel inspired to learn. I think that my strengths are that I listen to the students, and believe in transparent communication. I…

I think the most crucial part of any tutoring experience is to make sure that the student knows that the tutor is there for them and will not get frustrated if mess something up. If the tutor comes off as condescending or annoyed at a lack of progress, it can allow the student to put added pressure on him/herself or create an aversion to learning…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. With students, a tutor should not only be considered a teacher but also a friend who they can inquire about topics and issues which a tutor has already experienced and can be an assistance of. My strengths are a…

To try and understand the student and not judge them but instead work with them to gain a better understanding of the subject. I am good at empathizing with students and figuring out what they don't understand in the problem. Then breaking down what they don't understand into more digestible…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand said student, and adjust their methods accordingly. With constant practice and drilling, students will be more comfortable doing the questions themselves and be confident in the…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more…

The most important thing is for a tutor to understand a student's preferences and what sort of teaching style would suit them. Different people have different learning suitabilities. While obviously a tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. Giving a student an interest in the subject will make them improve their grades even by thereself as they will enjoy studying and seek…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. This involves building close bonds with their students to understand their academic needs so that tutoring sessions can be tailored specifically to the student. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

Inside EveleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages and also worked on finding percentages of quantities in everyday contexts.

Year 8 student Mason focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions as well as solving quadratic equations using the completing the square method.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Aisha tackled trigonometric identities and began introductory differentiation, reinforcing both with targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed a tendency to "jump to what he thinks is the answer—often a guess if he doesn't follow a logical process," especially in pattern and word problems.

In Year 7, one learner often avoided writing working out on paper, preferring mental calculation, which led to repeated basic errors ("Writing his working out on paper rather than doing it all in his head").

At senior level, hesitation with new types of questions surfaced: as noted in Year 11, "she hesitates to try and asks me how to do it rather than try it herself first." This can leave students feeling uncertain when independent problem-solving is required.

Recent Achievements

One Eveleigh tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to complete differentiation problems independently, managed to work through tricky questions on her own and even explained new methods back to the tutor.

In another high school session, a Year 10 student—who used to rush through area and perimeter questions without checking—has started pausing to think through each step before answering, leading to more accurate solutions.

Meanwhile, a younger student has begun asking for help when stuck rather than guessing quietly, showing much more openness during problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
