If you are a tutor, your job is to empower other people. Even if you are picking up blind spots, asking a student to paraphrase something, or advising more research in a particular area, there are ways to convey this information that are encouraging and helpful, (rather than condescending). We all have blind spots, too. I have found it…

I think that if a tutor can initially convince their student why what they’re studying is important, then the relationship will be much more amicable. I also think it’s important that we make sure they’re really understanding key concepts, rather than making it seem like they do to avoid embarrassment around or working harder, I have seen…

The most important thing is definitely being patient and kind. A lot of people sometimes forget children/teens are not fully functioning adults yet, and they’re learning. Therefore, it’s very important to push them to the best they can do. By being indulgent and firm at the same time, I believe a tutor can get children to be their very best,…

I believe that a tutor plays an incredible different role to the classroom teacher. Being a role that has one-on-one interaction with a student, a tutor's most important thing is to focus their practice and method to the individual characteristics of the student. An example of this could be having activities with high intensity and movement for…

I believe that if a tutor is kind, patient and shows respect, they will see greater results with their students. In order for effective learning, it is paramount to create a distraction-free, positive environment, and prepare well-thought out lessons ahead of time. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, I think that if a tutor is ready to motivate,…

I think understanding each student is an important part to tutoring, and being able to motivate each student into learning for themselves should be the ultimate goal for any teacher. I've had some teachers that did that for me and I have them remembered always. I think students would like me. I'm easygoing and try to make the content appealing,…

In my opinion, it is important to teach children in simple ways so that they can understand even the complex and difficult concepts. It is also important to understand questions asked by students and give appropriate answers to their questions. Students need to be acknowledged and respected. As a tutor, I am a patient person and a good listener. I…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to never patronise them, and always show a keen interest (not just aptitude) in the tutored subject. Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

Help them understand the why behind the answers. Be supportive and patient during the learning process. I am easy and accommodating and I know what I am doing. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is grow their confidence in the subject matter so that they know, with work, they will understand what their teacher is telling them and succeed rather than constantly feeling defeated. The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for their student, and understand the way that they learn. Understanding where their challenges are and where their strengths are. I believe it is integral to grasp the individual students learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. As a part of this, it's also important to learn what doesn't work for them, and avoid these techniques. For example, an English teacher might teach them poetic terms by getting the student to write out definitions. If a students doesn't…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on converting fractions to percentages and explored main causes and solutions for climate change, including renewable energy sources.

In Year 9, Ethan worked through exam-style questions involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of negative integers as well as identifying coefficients and simplifying algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Sophie practiced solving worded simultaneous equations and found midpoints between coordinates using worked examples to strengthen her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived without her school book or resources, making it impossible to check how classroom methods matched tutoring approaches. "She didn't bring her school book home, so I couldn't check how her teacher is teaching," noted one tutor.

In senior Chemistry, a Year 12 struggled to recall prior processes and did not share important test results until late in the session, limiting time for feedback and review.

In Year 3 maths, frequent loss of focus led to messy written work—her attention drifted and number patterns became harder to grasp. Tasks lingered unfinished or were rushed, causing ongoing confusion.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after struggling with exam nerves, began openly discussing her stress and worked with the tutor to develop strategies for staying calm in test conditions.

In another session, a Year 9 student made noticeable progress by arriving well-prepared and asking for clarification on geometry concepts she'd found confusing last month—she's also making an effort to keep her work neater than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school has started sounding out tricky words instead of guessing, which helped her tackle new spelling challenges confidently during reading time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeronga State High School.
