Above all, a teacher should be compassionate. Compassion matters more than anything else. I feel that I try to understand students rather than simply trying to teach them. We all have weaknesses, and being able to identify them, especially when they are not easily visible, is the most important…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is focus on the specific needs of the student, identify areas of weakness, and tailor the teaching approach accordingly. Students may have gaps in their understanding due to missed classes, inadequate explanations, or other reasons. A tutor can identify these gaps and help bridge them by revisiting…

To reassure them that having a tutor and needing a bit of extra help is nothing to be ashamed of. Moreover than learning the tasks, helping them feel they're capable of more than they think they are. I believe that listening to the student is among the most important things a tutor can do. It is imperative that the student feels comfortable to share concepts that they feel unfamiliar with, therefore building a relationship with them is crucial. Having a good understanding of the student's optimal way of learning is also beneficial to the…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. (1) Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of understanding completely vary. My students will emotionally accept me only if I am patient enough. (2) Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore the strengths and weaknesses of my students, finally develop…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. Inside FelixstowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Em worked through the more challenging parts of a maths folio task, including strategies for formatting equations in Word, and began exploring REDOX reactions in Chemistry.

For Year 9, Isabel focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions and simplifying algebraic fractions.

In Year 10, Ana prepared for her exam by covering key theory from the functions and relations topic, an area she found particularly unfamiliar.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived at sessions without recent test papers or clear notes, making it hard to pinpoint gaps before exams—one tutor observed, "she hadn't brought her maths test home, so next time."

In Year 11, motivation to revise independently was low, with folio drafts left incomplete and little energy for organizing formal write-ups.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner's written work in Pythagoras' Theorem was described as needing clearer layout; corrections were required just to follow the logic.

In each case, confusion and disorganization led to frustration or missed opportunities for timely feedback.

Recent Achievements

A Felixstow tutoring session saw a Year 11 student become much more proactive—she now arrives with her own list of questions, and recently worked through every item in just one hour.

In another win, a high schooler who used to hesitate when facing algebraic proofs was able to tackle most steps independently, only checking in for minor guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student initially found trigonometric functions confusing but became noticeably more engaged after experimenting with different angle values during the lesson; she even asked for extra practice examples before finishing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Felixstow Primary School.
