In my opinion, it's most important to help students to understand basic concepts and theories when tutoring them. With these knowledge, students will have confidence to overcome problems and hardness in Maths by themselves. For the past two years, I have tutored several students in Physics and Maths, especially Math Methods year 11 and 12.…

As a tutor you can provide a child/student with a different outlook on their learning. For example, their school teacher may have explained it in a way that the child didn't particularly understand, and as a tutor you can give them a more unique and individual learning experience that they wouldn't get at school. Providing children with one-on-one…

I believe the most crucial thing that a tutor can do for their student is to encourage not only their understanding of a subject/topic but also their passion and enthusiasm for it. I believe that allowing a student to flourish in an environment tailored to them allows them to treat their studies less as a chore and more as a passion. This not…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence alongside their understanding. It’s not just about getting the right answer; it's about helping them believe they can get there themselves. Creating a supportive, non-judgmental space is really important, as is adaptability and attention to each student's needs. A…

Communication is very important, as it is vital that the student is able to convey any questions, misunderstandings or opinions to the tutor for a tailored tutoring experience to occur. It is also at the same time that the tutor needs to be precise and straightforward with their explanation on different concepts. I think I generally build a…

At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. Inside FelixstowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Em worked through the more challenging parts of a maths folio task, including strategies for formatting equations in Word, and began exploring REDOX reactions in Chemistry.

For Year 9, Isabel focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions and simplifying algebraic fractions.

In Year 10, Ana prepared for her exam by covering key theory from the functions and relations topic, an area she found particularly unfamiliar.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived at sessions without recent test papers or clear notes, making it hard to pinpoint gaps before exams—one tutor observed, "she hadn't brought her maths test home, so next time."

In Year 11, motivation to revise independently was low, with folio drafts left incomplete and little energy for organizing formal write-ups.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner's written work in Pythagoras' Theorem was described as needing clearer layout; corrections were required just to follow the logic.

In each case, confusion and disorganization led to frustration or missed opportunities for timely feedback.

Recent Achievements

A Felixstow tutoring session saw a Year 11 student become much more proactive—she now arrives with her own list of questions, and recently worked through every item in just one hour.

In another win, a high schooler who used to hesitate when facing algebraic proofs was able to tackle most steps independently, only checking in for minor guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student initially found trigonometric functions confusing but became noticeably more engaged after experimenting with different angle values during the lesson; she even asked for extra practice examples before finishing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Felixstow Primary School.
