I believe building an understanding about the student and the ways in which they learn best is what separates a tutor from a textbook. The personal skills needed to determine that are most important as it then allows the customisation of learning. Because my understanding of concepts are very logical, I am able to give explanations depending on…

Positive reinforcement is very important. As mentioned, tutoring the students through the small digestible bits and giving them reaffirmation along the journey is very important in establishing confidence on which we can build on. I am very patient with students and tailor my approach to the students depending on how receptive they are to…

To build a student’s confidence in the subject is to solve half of their problems for them. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive, encouraging environment and to build the student's confidence. It’s essential to make sure the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes because that’s…

In my personal opinion, the most important thing any kind of teacher can do for their student, is help them discover an expression of self in the subject. One may think this is quite impossible in the more technically oriented subjects, but I find that every branch of learning holds the potential for an expression of self. I am patient while…

I believe that tutors must aim to sculpt their students spark for the subject their teaching: to not only help them understand the subject and obtain a good outcome, but to make them enjoy the process of learning. I believe that a tutor has truly succeeded their responsibilities when their student anticipates their lessons and excell due to the…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to be patient with the student and try to understand why they find that specific problem or concept difficult. It is the tutors job to explain and teach so that it is easy for the student to understand. I am very understanding and patient. It is difficult to learn new skills and teachings,…

Carolyn, Kew

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
