A tutor is not a teacher but helps aid a student to grow and be there in times of difficulties. So according to me, a tutor can be there for the student as an additional aid to help him/her improve and excel in their studies. Being thorough is the biggest strength of any teacher. Additionally, being calm and patient is another biggest strength any…

Tutors should not immediately give students what they want. Providing answers is the easy path for both tutors and students, but then the solutions will always be mine, not the student's. I am not going to simply give them fish; I will teach them how to fish. I have varied experience, not just in, not only in the education sector but also in a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand its individual needs. Every student has unique learning styles, strengths, and areas for improvement. It's essential to take the time to understand each student's specific needs, challenges, and goals. By assessing their current knowledge and identifying gaps in…

I consider creating a positive and supportive learning atmosphere as paramount for a tutor. Beyond academic assistance, it involves nurturing confidence, offering constructive feedback, and acknowledging achievements. Tailoring teaching methods to accommodate individual learning styles is equally vital. Effective communication, coupled with active…

I think some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student are: Make their learning experience enjoyable by making learning creative. Making students feel confident about themselves and in the subject. Most importantly making the subject interesting and igniting curiosity in students. Tutors should establish a friendly student-teacher bond which makes students comfortable and they feel safe to approach you for doubts. Failure to do so can make students feel intimidated and this can impact the teaching negatively. Tutors should also make sure that all the students in the class are following the things taught, because every…

be compassionate with your students and believe in them. I believe students tend to believe a lot of what their teacher's think about them and they look up to their tutors. Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
