Ultimately, a tutor only has so much time each week with a student and so I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students discover their own affinity for a particular subject and inspire them to carry out their own research. To this end, it is crucial to welcome curiosity and not to limit their imagination by restricting them…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide support and encouragement, creating a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. A tutor should guide students through challenges, helping them develop problem-solving skills rather than just giving answers. It’s essential to target…

Motivate. If a tutor can motivate a student to do whatever they want, The student will succeed in life. Motivation won't only drive my students to improve in mathematics but also other subjects. Other than knowing my mathematics, I believe I am an easy teacher. I make the work look easy for the students, so their mentality towards the work is…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel at ease with the subject at hand, especially to the point where they begin their own individual methods of inquiry into the subject. A student should never feel under pressure to perform in ways that make them feel discouraged about their own abilities. The consequence of that is…

The most important part of tutoring is to make sure the student grasps a concept entirely and doesn't have any gaps in their knowledge before moving onto new topics. It is essential for students to fully comprehend a difficult concept as this will help them remember it better, gain confidence in the topic and lower their stress. Additionally,…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. I believe the most important aspect of being a tutor is to be able to tailor the teaching to the needs of the students. Some students might be ahead of the initial plan and some may fall behind, it is crucial for us to help them get on the right track and make sure that everyone understands the concepts for their level or further. As an usyd…

A good tutor should help their student develop a love for what they are learning. When this is done successfully, this has a knock-on effect on the student's results as they are more engaged with the content they are learning. This starts with the tutor being passionate about the content they are teaching and being determined to push the student…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I think it's really important for a tutor to offer intrinsic motivation to a student. I find that alot of students are easily academically discouraged. Being friendly and adapting their teaching speed to the pace of the student. not having one universal teaching style, but altering it is how you keep the student interested and make it easier for them to grasp the concept. For example, using sports examples to explain a physics concept to a high school athlete will keep them engaged longer and add…

It is true and no doubt that high grades can allow one to enter into a great university with a good degree. However, it is more important on how the students choose the right path in their lives that can make them happy and heart…

Inside Five DockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlotte worked through trigonometry and measurement problems, including Pythagoras' theorem and calculating area and volume for her upcoming exam.

Year 10 student Angelique revised expanding and factorising algebraic expressions as well as tackled percentage-based problem solving to prepare for half-yearly assessments.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Blake focused on narrative planning exercises before writing a short story using his plan, also practicing reading comprehension with summary questions from short texts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student's working out was difficult to follow—steps weren't clearly shown, which made it hard for the marker to understand her process and spot where errors occurred. "She knows how to answer the questions, it is just about showing the marker how she got to her answer," a tutor observed after reviewing algebra exercises.

Meanwhile, in Year 5 English, homework completion has become inconsistent; missing weekly tasks led to gaps in reading comprehension practice.

During a timed selective school writing task in Year 7, another student lost focus mid-way and left several sections unfinished—confidence seemed to dip when challenged by unfamiliar prompts.

Recent Achievements

One Five Dock tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with calculus now confidently working through differentiation problems, clearly showing each step and explaining how she tested the nature of stationary points.

In English, a Year 10 boy recently submitted his creative writing on *Of Mice and Men*—not only did he capture the novel's style, but for the first time handed in his draft on time after weeks of late submissions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated to ask for help during reading tasks is now referring back to her book whenever unsure, summarising key events accurately without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Five Dock Public School.
