As a tutor, being patient with students who take time to process concepts is a strong point, and taking different approaches in teaching concepts is more important than brute…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, be empathetic to their challenges, and make learning approachable. It’s not just about teaching the content — it’s about helping students believe in themselves and showing them that they can succeed. A tutor should also adapt their teaching style to…

The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

I believe a tutor's most important role is to help students develop confidence and become independent learners. While improving grades is important, lasting success comes from understanding concepts rather than memorising procedures. A good tutor should create a positive learning environment, encourage curiosity, and teach students how to think…

Make the topic enjoyable. The amount of times my mind has wandered off in lectures cause of how the lecturers just spew information and not engage with the students. This showed me that tutors need to explain things in a way that is engaging. Different students need different methods, some like visualising the question so I draw the question out…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. First of all, transpositional thinking is really important. For students, they're the first time to learn some concepts while tutors have been dealing with the same concepts for at least several years. So a tutor must think from a student's perspective to find a better way to teach students. Secondly, a tutor should be able to check students'…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. It is important for them to engage in active learning rather than just listening to a teacher speak passively. I find that I can relate to students on a personal level and connect with them through pop culture and references, strengthening…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. Inside FlemingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice worked on calculating mean, median, mode, and range in statistics as well as identifying angles with symmetry using visual examples.

In Year 9, Bita practised solving linear equations and worked through a worksheet on mean, median and mode provided by her teacher.

For Year 10, Laura focused on revising algebra and graphing techniques from the Year 11 curriculum to strengthen her foundation for upcoming studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for a statistics test hesitated to share which probability topics felt hardest, making it difficult to target weak spots; her notebook was also missing dates, so tracking progress became confusing.

In Year 9 algebra, as one tutor put it, "he skipped showing steps in simplification, which hid sign errors"—extra time was then spent hunting mistakes instead of building confidence.

A Year 7 student left homework incomplete before lessons and struggled with organizing exercise books and teacher feedback requests.

During Year 12 revision, reluctance to attempt unfamiliar graph questions led to gaps ahead of the upcoming test.

Recent Achievements

One Flemington tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to freeze up on tough algebra questions—now, after working through some challenging Further Maths problems, he confidently explained his reasoning and tackled even the trickiest ones without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 9 student who'd struggled to distinguish between explanatory and response variables was able to clearly verbalise his thought process and correctly identify each one during practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once guessed at answers now talks through her multiplication steps out loud and checks her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Flemington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kensington Community High School.
