Having been a student myself, the greatest feeling when coming away from my tutor was a feeling of relief and greater understanding. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply make them feel more confident in approaching and applying concepts to questions. I believe my strengths as a tutor would be my ability to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. My principle strength as a tutor would be my understanding of how mathematical concepts work, which helps me to explain them. I do this often with my colleagues during…

I beleive the most important thing a tutor can be is have a sound knowledge of the feiled so that they can answer any questions. I think it is also very important to be friendly and to make the learning fun and more easier to be retained in your memory. A tutor should be able to establish rapport and trust by being honest. This is the critical element to a successful tutoring relationship. Being patient is also very important as what might be obvious and easy for a tutor may not be for that student. Being a good listener is another essential characteristic that a tutor must-have, as it's vital to…

Since students most commonly get tutoring as they do not understand the approach taken by their teacher to the subject, I believe the most important thing is to relate to the student, and see the problem from their perspective. This leads to the ability to create personalised approaches to the theories presented in class, and allow the student to…

Improve their self esteem by helping them do better at school. I think the student being tutored is the most important person, so you want to help them and improve their skills as much as possible. I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure there is continual improvement in their work. If there are signs the student is not improving, then it's important to look for weaknesses or anything the student is struggling with and work on those areas. Imparting an enjoyment of learning something new. I am only with the student for a short time compared to their time in school, so increasing intrinsic motivation to learn has a much greater effect in the long run, as well as decreasing the chance of burnout due to stress in the higher grades. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to work the questions out and guide them rather than just telling them the answers. By actually teaching instead of telling, they are more likely to enjoy the subject and do well on exams and future assignments. The end goal of tutoring is for the student to be capable of…

Inside Fortitude ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Adam worked on solving algebraic expressions with fractions and reviewed angle properties of parallel lines, as well as calculating the volume and surface area of cylinders and prisms.

In Year 10, Laila focused on understanding thermal conductivity and heat transfer types for a physics assignment, along with practicing natural logarithm graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Priscilla concentrated on designing a scale model of her school oval for maths, applying measurement concepts like scales, plans, and data collection to her project.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student left her school textbook at home and struggled to visualize angles in complex polygons, which slowed her problem-solving during geometry tasks.

In Year 11 Physics, unclear assignment instructions led to confusion—"the requirements for the physics assignment were too vague to understand," a tutor noted—which resulted in missed criteria and incomplete research before writing.

A Year 6 learner repeatedly forgot both homework and key materials, such as notebooks and flashcards, making it hard to review prior content or track progress.

Each of these scenarios meant valuable lesson time was spent retracing steps instead of advancing skills or building confidence.

Recent Achievements

A Fortitude Valley tutoring session saw one Year 11 student finally break through on worded bearing questions—last time, she struggled to set them up, but this week she worked through several independently and even tackled a tricky exam-style problem.

Another high schooler had previously rushed her assignments, but now she's pausing to ask clarifying questions aloud before starting and carefully checking each step; this shift has meant fewer errors in her homework.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to count slowly is now confidently using the "stairs method" for addition, finishing sums much more quickly than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brisbane Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Angelorum College.
