The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

I would say the most important things for me as a tutor is to support the students and provide them with past experience in terms of exam strategies and study skills and help them gain confidence in the subject. I will make sure their students fully understand the concepts instead of memorizing them. Maths is one of my academic strength as I have…

A tutor needs to provide a supportive learning environment for students. Tutoring is beyond explaining concepts and providing resources. I believe understanding the students' personal goals, personality and style of learning will allow me to provide them with a supportive learning environment where they are able to comfortably ask questions…

Emphasize with the students and help them build a positive learning habit which they can benefit from for a lifetime. The most crucial factors, in my opinion, are boosting the student's self-esteem, ensuring that they comprehend the material rather than merely memorizing it, and fostering an environment where they feel free to make mistakes. A good tutor not only helps with grades but also helps students develop problem-solving skills they can carry forward.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel confident with any subject or topic they are struggling with. To provide continuous guidance and support to them. To ensure that no student is left behind in any way. To motivate them to give their 100% in every subject. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is to simplify…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

Mental support Always be active to answer questions (even in off work periods of the day) Make a good plan of what the session will be all about before it starts. Openmind at work ... A tutor should always understand the level of understanding of a particular subject by a student, so that he/she can start teaching from the basics if necessary. I am people-friendly. I know English, Tamil, Chinese, and German, so I can speak in a way students can understand the topics clearly. Also, I am strong in my fundamentals, so I can teach…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to truly understand the student and make them feel supported and comfortable. The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. The tutor should also be kind and attentive towards the children. I am very comfortable around children, and I tend to make them comfortable too. I also like to play with certain tips and tricks so that…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. Inside GlebeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Chloe focused on solving algebraic equations by finding the value of x and practiced simplifying expressions, as well as working through percentage problems such as increasing or decreasing values and calculating GST.

In Year 9, Liam worked on ratios and rates with practical examples and was introduced to basic factorisation skills.

For a younger learner in Year 5, Emma strengthened her understanding of area calculations alongside strategies for division using visual models.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student missed a scheduled Zoom lesson, meaning they lost out on targeted feedback just before a key trigonometry assessment.

For one Year 11, "notes were disorganised and it was difficult to find the formulas for cosine rule when revising," which slowed down practice and led to confusion in test conditions.

In Year 8, errors in homework weren't reviewed, so similar mistakes kept appearing with ratios and percentages.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner's times tables practice focused only on familiar numbers—new patterns were avoided if they felt uncertain or slow, causing hesitation when solving multi-step word problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Glebe tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to show working now carefully explains each algebraic step aloud, especially when evaluating tricky fractions.

Another high schooler began the term making frequent errors with quadratic equations but recently completed an entire worksheet without needing hints—self-correcting two mistakes along the way.

For a younger learner in Year 4, times tables had been a real challenge, yet last session he jumped straight into practice questions and got nearly all of them right without prompting or counting on fingers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St James Catholic Primary School.
