A tutor should be able to explain topics in a variety of different ways in order to best suit the students’ needs. They should be versatile and adaptable to students with all backgrounds and prior understandings. I am very patient with all students who are willing to learn and I am able to effectively seek help and alternatives when I come…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

While improving grades and academic performance is important, I believe one of the most valuable things I can do as a tutor is help students develop confidence in themselves. By supporting them in recognising their strengths and understanding the full extent of their abilities, I aim to empower students to believe in their potential. This…

Build their confidence alongside their competence, those two move together. A student who understands the material but panics under pressure hasn't fully learned it. The other big one is teaching them how to think through a problem independently, so they need you less over time, not more. I'm good at diagnosing why someone is stuck, not just what…

Instill the resilience and capacity for students to dedicate and apply themselves to their learning rather than being dependent on a tutor to give them all the answers. I tailored my teaching style and session structure to suit the needs of my students rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. I pride myself in making learning enjoyable…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

A tutor should be capable enough to teach their students in a way where the knowledge imparted isn't just taught for the exams or tests, but taught as a lesson which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. I am extremely patient when it comes to explaining a concept. I am very calm and composed around people who are younger to me.…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to cultivate the interest and engagement of the students. For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

When a tutor takes personal and genuine responsibility for the learning of the student, it really makes the student want to work hard enough to meet their goals. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ignite a passion and 'vision' for learning. Our current society tends to view academia as a means to an end as opposed to an ends in itself, and if a tutor awakens a love for the subject in his student, then they have succeeded. By doing so, the student becomes more engaged and receptive…

Allowing students to become independent thinkers and restorning their self confidence is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. This means while you guide them in filling gaps in knowledge and breaking down difficult concepts, the tutor is able to build these fundamental skills in the student. In instilling these skills, I…

Local Reviews

Thanh has increased my daughter's confidence in her maths ability. She has a no nonsense but fun approach that keeps a teenager positive about continuing tutoring. My daughter likes that Thanh has different methods of teaching concepts that make more sense to her. And best of all she is positive about my daughters progress.

Inside Glen WaverleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Kye worked on long multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers (including zeroes) and was introduced to division using visual strategies.

Year 7 student Elle focused on probability concepts, tackling practice questions involving multiple events and converting fractions to decimals as part of test preparation.

For Year 8, revision for Kye included rearranging algebraic equations and reviewing fundamental skills in bracket multiplication, helping consolidate methods for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to bring past tests for review, which meant missed chances to clarify recurring mistakes—"he couldn't check which algebra steps were lost in the test."

In Year 8 maths, forgetting to attempt set homework limited practice with foundational topics like BEDMAS and basic equations.

One Year 6 student often tried questions in their head without showing working; this hid errors when tackling area problems.

Across both junior and senior years, not recording confusing questions during school videos led to gaps that lingered into lessons.

Without these process tweaks, confusion quietly accumulates between sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Waverley tutor noticed some great changes lately. Kye, a high school student, recently brought home his data test with 93%—a big leap after earlier trouble remembering statistics concepts, and he now checks his notes to solve new problems without prompting.

Elle, also in high school, picked up algebraic angle questions much faster than before; she's started explaining her working out aloud rather than guessing quietly.

Meanwhile, Trishelle (primary) has begun completing all her homework each week on her own initiative and points out exactly which maths areas still worry her before starting new tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Waverley Secondary College.
