A tutor must be able to not simply teach a subject but also create a desire for learning and must be able to do both to effectively teach. I also think that a tutor should be able to build on previously known concepts by the student and be able to articulate ideas in different ways to enhance their understanding of a topic. My strengths lie in my…

I believe that personalisation is what sets apart a tutor from an effective teacher. Students should initially be analysed for their approach to questions, personal goals and grievances to adroitly construct a program for them to adapt to. Consistency can further this notion and assist the student in improving their grades. My Strengths as a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure the student is comfortable to ask questions and is able to approach you while trying to understand a concept. My strengths as a tutor is my ability to understand what a student is struggling with and figure out different ways in which to teach the concept. I am fun and approachable…

A tutor can help a student to gain confidence. Usually students lose confidence and thus lose interest in a subject. Mathematics, being really important for career opportunities, is an interesting subject, we just need the right support at the right time and that's what tutors are there for. Confidence and hard work is the key to succeed in any…

A tutor can be a best friend at times. Not every time we need to make our students just do their studies. The biggest thing a tutor can contribute is his/her time. For a student getting access to his/her tutor at any time with any hurdle is the biggest thing that he/she needs. So I guess being available at all times for a student is the biggest…

A tutor firstly have to understand a student or knows better what the way that student likes of teaching . A student preference is always a first poriority of a teacher as I always believe that a teacher is like a candle who burn itself and give light to others. I think the strength and weakness of a teacher is their students . If a student…

Make sure to help them at anytime and with anything they need help with. I don’t believe in tutors who can’t help students if they have any questions which is not related exactly with the topic they are studying. The most important thing a tutor can do is really to distribute their knowledge about the content they are tutoring. Understanding the student has to be the most important thing a tutor can do. As a tutor, you need to know that the student might be scared to attempt that particular subject and face his/her weakness. Thus, you should make the student feel comfortable enough to communicate to you about his problems and be reassured that you will help him/her…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is firstly enhance their knowledge. Also schools may be a great learning space, sometimes because of the amount of students in a class, it may become hard for a child to communicate and get extra help from the teacher. A tutor must understand that each student is going through a separate journey in life and explore how their life experiences may have shaped their perception of their strengths and weaknesses. By understanding these circumstances, I believe a tutor should design an environment where…

Margret, Glenwood

Inside GlenwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aryan worked through fraction operations—adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions—and practised connecting percentages to decimals and fractions.

For Year 8, Alisha focused on finding the surface areas and volumes of composite solids using notes and worksheets, along with reviewing formulas for prisms.

In senior secondary, Maya (Year 11) completed HSC exam preparation by tackling varied past paper questions and clarifying major doubts in topics including trigonometry and statistics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra sessions, a student often left working incomplete when solving equations, which made it hard to spot where misunderstandings with variables arose. As one tutor observed, "she needs to talk aloud so the tutor can know which areas need improvement."

In a senior geometry lesson (Year 11), revision focused mostly on easier past exam questions rather than tackling harder bearings and proof problems—missing a chance to build deeper confidence before assessments.

A Year 7 student avoided writing out steps for fraction addition, leading to repeated denominator errors and confusion about simplifying answers during timed practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenwood noticed a Year 10 student who previously struggled with scatter plots now drawing them accurately and sharing that he'd received high marks on his topic test.

In a senior session, another student who tended to rely heavily on the tutor's help for algebra was able to tackle multi-step questions solo after a few alternate explanations—solving harder problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, during primary tutoring, one child who rarely asked questions started pausing to clarify things mid-task instead of pushing through confused, showing real initiative. The last session ended with her confidently converting fractions both ways on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanhope Garden Library/ Dennis Johnson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caddies Creek Public School.
