On top of efficiently solving problems, a tutor should be able to explain to the students why it is that they are doing what they are doing. A tutor should explain why are they studying a particular topic in mathematics and what is its application. Finally, a tutor should be able to make the student enjoy what they are doing and make students look…

It is the bond I look forward to with students. The relationship on the ability to connect with them and unblock the barrier that stops them from achieving their dreams. Also, it is the power to inspire students in good terms, such as sharing a similar level of enthusiasm and inspire them to pursue a related field into the future. Strong…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assure them that they are making progress. They shouldn't be compared to their peers, but rather themselves from before. I'm very patient and I understand that the reason many of the young people going to extra tutoring do so because they need help. I am aware that the students…

Be interactive by continuously observing where they are at. Show don't tell. Keep challenging them by pushing the boundaries of their knowledge, but be mindful of their confidence level. A tutor must not only teach the student the concepts that they are learning at the present time but also guide them in being able to learn efficiently for their work in the future. It is important to develop good habits early on so that a student may progress further in their learning. I believe that I am able to relate to students very well in…

Be patient, understanding, and be encouraging! High school is not an easy thing, not just because of what you're learning but also because life must go on outside of school. University students face the same problem, so we know that not all days are great days. So as a tutor, you need to be supportive of your student where necessary, so that when…

Engineering Studies Tutor Taringa, QLD
I think the purpose of a tutor is to complement and supplement the school classroom learning to ensure that the student has a good understanding of the subject's content, but ultimately a good tutor will develop a student's independent learning ability, and only fill in gaps in a student's knowledge when required. A tutor should guide a student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure there is continual improvement in their work. If there are signs the student is not improving, then it's important to look for weaknesses or anything the student is struggling with and work on those areas. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. Go at a pace in which the student feels comfortable, as going too quickly may be the reason they didn't understand it when their teachers taught them. Following this a tutor needs to have done some work on the subject before seeing the student as if the tutor doesn't understand what he/she is saying, the student has no chance. Also going through…

Inside GracevilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Oliver practised long multiplication and division, as well as working with decimals and identifying different angles.

Year 7 student Sophie focused on graphing and number lines, using plotting activities to reinforce understanding.

For Year 10, Emily worked through solving line equations between specific points and applied problem-solving skills to algebraic contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student reviewing past test results in maths sometimes missed chances to correct errors—notes read, "going over past test results and some more problem solving," but little feedback was acted on before moving ahead.

In Year 8, one learner found it tough to follow multi-step questions in algebra, losing track of process when calculations became lengthy; as noted, "a bit tough following long form multi-tiered questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student practicing long multiplication often left working untidy, making it harder to spot mistakes. In each case, confusion or uncertainty slowed progress rather than lack of content knowledge.

Recent Achievements

One Graceville tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid exam prep now actively seeking out practice problems, especially in linear functions—she even combined equations on her own for the first time last week.

A Year 7 student, previously hesitant with problem solving, surprised his tutor by tackling multi-step homework questions independently and finishing ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who'd struggled to distinguish certain letters can now sound out almost the entire alphabet and self-corrects when mixing up 'J' and 'G'. Last session, he read a full page aloud without skipping any tricky letters.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Indooroopilly Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christ the King School.
