I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be providing the student with the toolbox to be able to solve problems effectively in the chosen subject. In addition, a tutor can provide the student with confidence and belief in oneself, which helps the student academically, and in general. My strengths as a tutor include very…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to understand their specific needs and hence find creative avenues in order to best convey a concept. Continual encouragement and acknowledging success whether it may be big or small foster self-efficacy and motivation within a student hence opening them up to reach their full…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning really happens when students feel safe to try, even if they don’t get it right the first time. A tutor should also explain things in a way that makes sense to…

To make the students be clear of the basics which helps the students in the long run and also to be polite with them as not all students have the same level of understanding, and each student has different pace at which they learn so we need to give them as much time as possible to learn better. The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. The most important thing a tutor can do is believe in the student. This along with teaching them the value of hard work is significant as it pushes a student to access their potential knowing that they are supported. The value of hard work is also an imperative that should be conveyed through the tutors lessons regardless of the content taught. I…

Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

The tutor must help the student improve in the subject they are teaching. This involves explaining things clearly so the student can understand and are thus enabled to tackle such questions and tasks on their own in the future. Tutors are valuable to a student, and offer something unique. For one, meaningful relationships can be built and developed in tutoring, which in turn builds engagement. From my personal experience, learning comes more easily when the teacher strives to craft close relationships with students. From the tedium of the classroom, tutors can also…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to set a good example. Inside GreenacreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah practised time conversions and explored different multiplication and division methods using visual aids.

Year 9 student Sam focused on solving algebraic equations by expanding brackets and also worked through formulas, including changing the subject of a formula.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled probability questions with an emphasis on conditional probability and received support with related homework tasks.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, a student struggled with interpreting division questions and often forgot key steps, leading to confusion during reciprocal tasks. As one tutor noted, "he needed more direction and was very slow in his problem solving."

By Year 11, forgetting important algebraic formulas and prior content made it difficult to approach new problems confidently—sometimes even basic equations slipped away mid-task.

Motivation flagged during lengthy exercise sessions, especially when progress felt slow or mistakes piled up.

In another session, missing out on half the planned content due to time management left unfinished work and mounting frustration as deadlines approached.

Recent Achievements

A Greenacre tutor noted a Year 11 student has become much less reliant on prompts, now working through tricky equations independently and even stopping the lesson to clarify steps when unsure—something he never did before.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor observed that she completed her homework ahead of time for the first time this term and could quickly explain how square roots work without needing reminders.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to hesitate with new maths topics now confidently answers perimeter questions unaided, finishing all practice problems by himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenacre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John Vianney Catholic Primary School.
