Motivate their students. I have a motto that I tell all of my members: "It doesn't matter if we get it right or wrong. An incorrect answer is an opportunity to learn something new." It's something I truly believe and something the children I tutor respond really well to. It takes the pressure off the need to be perfect and instead focuses them on…

Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is show passion and that they care, and that they are someone the students can…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster confidence, create a supportive learning environment, and provide clear, personalised guidance. A tutor should not only help students understand the subject matter but also encourage independent thinking and a genuine interest in learning. Building a positive rapport…

A tutor can guide a student to succeed. Not only in studies, but life in general. If tutors can make students aware of certain things which changes how they operate and that is the greatest thing a tutor can do. I am very patient and understanding. I consider the most important attributes that a tutor can have for a student is the ability to listen, to be patient, and to be able to explain concepts and questions in more ways than one. I personally struggled during my final years of school (11 and 12). Despite the struggles, I applied all my effort and learnt valuable lessons. Through my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure the student understands the content, and doesn't just get the marks if they don't understand the content properly. They also need to be someone who the student can feel comfortable talking to and asking questions, regardless of how 'silly' the question may seem. Good communication…

The students already have teachers at school. Rather than being just another teacher figure, a tutor is also a mentor that travels on a journey alongside the student. As such, the most important things they can do for the child is to be compassionate, patient, and support the child with the goals they want to achieve. I am patient, I take the time…

The most important thing for a tutor to provide to a student is confidence. This means I will ensure students understand the concepts of the subject by teaching them the basics to build their confidence. My strengths…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do to assist a student is to understand that every individual has there own way of learning and that it is the tutor's role to adapt to the student to form personalised explanations and learning plans. The one thing more than anything that a tutor can do is to offer a safe place where students will not be afraid of failure. Then guide them step by step until they understand the concept, and encourage them to carry on even when things get difficult. A good tutor gives confidence and no knowledge. Inside Guildford WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zahra focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, as well as converting mixed fractions, using visual models for clarity.

Year 6 student Arjun tackled long division and multi-digit multiplication, along with simplifying equivalent fractions through step-by-step breakdowns.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Ava practised converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages, then applied these skills to real-world scenarios like interpreting data measurements.

Recent Challenges

During Year 8 English essay planning, a student struggled to structure responses and link examples to the main argument—often stopping mid-sentence out of uncertainty, as noted: "He needs improvement in writing his sentences so that the marker knows what he is talking about."

In Year 10 Mathematics, another student frequently misread multi-step worded problems ("difference between" vs. "between them"), leading to lost marks despite understanding the math itself; exam timing was also an issue.

In Year 4, distraction by things outside the window meant instructions were missed and double-digit subtraction tasks remained incomplete before time ran out.

Recent Achievements

One Guildford West tutor noted a Year 10 student who previously guessed at answers is now writing out each step for addition problems, showing real patience and methodical thinking.

In a recent high school English session, a student who once hesitated to share ideas began coming up with original points when structuring an exposition.

Another win from the lesson notes: a Year 6 student, who used to skip checking her work, has started backchecking her answers independently and is catching small mistakes herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Guildford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Primary School.
