Put themselves in the students’ place and prepare their lessons accordingly. Always impart empathy, consideration for their individual circumstances which will impact their learning and be ear when they need understanding and to debrief. Definitely when I enjoy my work it has to be my passion and enthusiasm and the way that translates to the…

“I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning clear and enjoyable, and help them develop independent learning skills. A good tutor doesn’t just teach content — they help the student believe in their ability to succeed.†“My strengths as a tutor are patience, clear…

Modern History Tutor Burnside, SA
The most important way in which I can aid my students is by providing them with the capability to master new content on their own. Alongside this, I can provide advice from the position of having completed with which they are grappling, allowing me to better aid them with my 'inside knowledge' of the curriculum. I believe my main strengths as a…

My understanding of a tutors role is not to do the students work, yet to uncover their natural ability so that they may proceed to increase their academic results. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do is not only provide advice but draw out the best of people. I have been told I am a 'people person', I previously worked in a busy…

Modern History Tutor Tusmore, SA
The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them to enjoy learning. While some may believe tutoring is a means by which students are forced to study, I think of it more so as a means by which students can be exposed to different ways of learning and retaining information. I am a rather calm and collected individual and thus, I…

Inside HawthorndeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie focused on multiplication and division strategies, also practising worded problem solving using real-life money scenarios.

In Year 8, Sam worked through trigonometric equations and explored circular geometry concepts, using diagrams to visualise angle relationships within a circle.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe reviewed applications of integration in calculus and tackled magnetic induction problems relevant to senior physics coursework.

Recent Challenges

Several senior students, such as those in Year 11 and 12 Physics and Methods, had not completed enough independent revision between sessions—one tutor observed, "Hadn't done much revision between our last two sessions so needs to get plenty done before his two tests."

In a recent proof-writing task for Year 10 Maths, missing the first steps led to confusion about which equations to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled to remember how she solved time conversion problems from one week to the next; retention faltered without consistent practice. This left her unsure during homework and slower when new questions appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Hawthorndene tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now openly explaining their approach to tricky maths problems, showing new willingness to talk through their thinking.

In Year 11 physics, a student made excellent progress with magnetic induction—after struggling last term, he's now able to explain core concepts without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once guessed at time questions is now taking her time to check which operation is needed before answering, and finished her last session by correctly solving all time problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorndene Primary School.
