I myself have had trouble with certain subjects in school and without a good teacher it really affected not just my grades but also my perception of myself. During this time my mother sent me to a tutor who was able to improve my previously weak grades. That tutor was able to give me confidence in my skills again and also obviously increased my…

I believe a tutor should teach a student how to love a subject instead of do it. For a student to be able to realise why they adore the subject and why they are studying it in the first place. A tutor should try their best to allow their students to feel like they are in a safe place, where they can ask any questions and feel free without feeling…

Personalize learning and teach the student specific to their learning style. Its best to ensure they learn the info required in the way the student is capable of learning, rather than enforcing them to follow a default method. Definitely communication and experience with younger people, if they struggle to understand a topic I could explain in…

Relating to my strengths as a tutor, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is giving a thorough and concise explanation of every single concept to a student, in a way that isn't only just memorizing, but also using their own logic and thought process to understand and learn on their own as they go. This must all be applied in an…

Understanding and patience, some students lack knowledge of basic concepts and require a boost, so it's important to tailor tutoring styles to each student, whether that is written examples or oral analogies, especially in the Maths and Sciences. I can simplify things to the most basic form, which is what I needed help with when I was in high…

Guidance is the most important thing. First, I would show the student how to solve the question. After that, I will guide them to solve one or two questions and let them have a try after that to make sure the student can fully understand the procedure and solve the question on their own. Of course, I will encourage them to ask the question if they…

In my humble opinion, I believe that ACTIVE LISTENING is the most important quality that good tutors must possess. - Good tutors must recognise that students generally have an idea of the topic at hand. Instead of simply continuing to "teach" it is vital that tutors ask students of their understanding of the topic so that gaps in knowledge can…

I believe forming a connection with the student and building a positive relationship with them that way they have a more positive look on being tutored. Most students dont enjoy the aspect of tutoring because it can be a chore for them, but by building a relationship during these sessions, you can make them look forward to being tutored more.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that the student feels they are being listened to and meeting their needs. For example, it is essential to work at the pace of your student, if your student only wants to pass their subject it is your job to make sure they are best suited for that to happen. Or if your student…

At its core, tutoring is about so much more than academic work; it's about building a relationship, cultivating a connection, and helping students change not only their results in a class, but also their attitude toward it. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapting their learning to give a more personalised learning…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is to try to find out the way the student learns best. Whether it is visually, auditory, or another way, the tutor should try to teach in a way that the student can learn the easiest, especially for primary school kids so they can begin to enjoy learning and studying instead of it being a boring task…

Inside HaynesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ruby focused on calculating the area of squares and rectangles, as well as identifying shapes and their dimensions using hands-on examples.

In Year 8, Jake worked through solving linear equations using the balance method and tackled structuring word problems into linear equations for practice.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Isabelle revised finance concepts including exponential growth and decay, along with consolidating her understanding of exponents during recent sessions.

Recent Challenges

In a recent Year 10 session, one student arrived without their homework or notebook, making it difficult to review progress and continue smoothly ("Talita was not able to bring her homework from the past session nor her notebook for the tutoring sessions").

For a Year 11 student in Methods, there was an over-reliance on their classpad; manual working was avoided even when tests would require written steps.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner struggled with organizing materials at the start of each lesson, which led to lost time settling in. In these moments, learning momentum was interrupted and feedback opportunities missed.

Recent Achievements

One Haynes tutor noticed a real shift with Owen, a high school student who previously struggled with algebra and would often get stuck on technical mistakes. Now, he's tackling questions more independently and even requested extra homework after mastering new problem-solving tricks for equations.

Another secondary student, Flynn, recently picked up matrices at school; he now works through addition and multiplication problems confidently on his classpad with barely any help.

Meanwhile, Miriam in primary school has started preparing her own questions before each session—a big change from waiting passively—and last week finished her decimals revision without needing prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Seville Grove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Willandra Primary School.
