A tutor should create a safe space for a student so that he/she can reach out whenever needed. Through this, a student will feel more comfortable in his/her studies and will acquire more confidence since they will have the opportunity to be more inquisitive. They will be more eager to learn and explore. My biggest strength as a tutor is patience.…

My main focus is to not just explain the content in a way they really understand the principles behind it and it would not just be memorising the content on the student's part. I also believe that connecting with the student can help the teaching learning process a lot. I am a very understanding person in general. So I am most of the time capable…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is pose as their mentor than just a teacher. By doing this, a student will feel safe, and empowered; this in turn will make them learn better. Moreover, it is important for a tutor to build their confidence. It is essential to build on the weak areas of a student. Additionally, a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. All of these examples show a great tutor. - I put a lot of care into my work. - I love seeing others thrive through my help. - I…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

The tutoring was fantastic. Izzy really enjoyed working with Maitreyee and feels fairly confident about how her test went (she even rang and said she would have been lost without the tutoring).

Inside HeathpoolTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Armando worked through solving **simultaneous equations** and applying geometry skills to perimeter and area problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on bivariate statistics by analysing **line of best fit**, calculating least squares regression, and interpreting interpolation and extrapolation using her calculator.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Tom reviewed **exponential regression** for a bivariate statistics assignment and practised financial modelling with real-life examples such as loan calculations and offset accounts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student's written working in matrix calculations was often hard to follow—labels and steps were missing, making it easy to miscopy numbers.

For a Year 11 assignment, uncertainty about task requirements led to confusion: "he agreed to check/clarify with his teacher," but the delay slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student preparing for exams relied heavily on calculator graphs without always adjusting scales or double-checking results; this meant errors sometimes went unnoticed until revision.

Across all years, moments of low confidence after setbacks have led some students to avoid unfamiliar problem types during independent practice.

Recent Achievements

One Heathpool tutor noticed that Armando, a high school student, recently bounced back after missing lessons due to illness by arranging extra meetings with his teacher and showing strong understanding in statistics and financial concepts—he even scored a B+ on two practice exams and could pinpoint areas for further improvement himself.

Another high schooler, Alia, who used to hesitate at the start of new problems, now attempts all worksheets independently before seeking help and has kept organised summaries for each topic; she achieved 87% in her last test.

In Year 7, one student confidently plotted graphs independently of linear relationships without guidance for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marryatville High School.
