As well as, being able to keep the student determined and positive if faced with a few hurdles along the way. Being a tutor brings me valuable lessons, one of which is to ensure the students understand the concepts through problems. It was quite challenging at first because some problems were quite tricky and the students could give up. But it was extremely important to make them believe that they can solve it by step-by-step instruction. It is not an…

Inside Henley Beach SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Samuel focused on all aspects of linear equations, from finding intercepts and gradients to sketching and interpreting graphs.

For Year 8, Emily practiced area and perimeter of rectangles, worked with 24-hour time, explored column and dot plots, tackled long multiplication, and was introduced to properties of light and geometric transformations like reflection and rotation.

Another Year 8 student revised 3D shapes and their nets, practiced plotting points on the Cartesian plane, reviewed rotational geometry concepts, and strengthened times tables along with long multiplication skills.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits impacted progress across year levels.

In Year 8 maths, did not complete homework as instructed, leaving double-digit multiplication shaky and undermining class confidence.

A Year 10 student faced similar issues: Student still did not complete homework with proper working showed either, making it tough to master problem-solving in fractions.

During a senior geometry session, the student forgot to bring previous work, leading to confusion when combining ratio and shape concepts.

In upper primary, skipping steps in order of operations meant errors multiplied—she takes too many steps at a time—and slowed improvement on mixed number tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Henley Beach South noticed that a Year 10 student, Samuel, who previously hesitated when tackling percentage increase and decrease questions, is now able to solve them independently and even explained the transfer of heat through particles and waves with clarity.

In a recent session, Emily (Year 7) shifted from needing step-by-step help with fractions to confidently adding and subtracting them using the butterfly method.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to guess answers during problem-solving activities now voices her thought process out loud and attempts new strategies before asking for guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Henley Beach Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Henley Beach Primary School.
