Understanding the best way to teach a particular student is the most important thing a tutor can do; to shape their teaching methods into something effective and efficient. Throughout my years in high school, I was the go to person if someone needed help with school work. This gave me a lot of experience in tutoring across all year levels…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is understand the student's mind and help them achieve their goal. The tutor can help them achieve their goal if they have difficulties and help them understand the basic concept. My strength as a tutor is the most important aspect of understanding the student. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is share their passion for the subject. This requires the tutor to be committed to helping the student understand the target subject in a way that is unique to each and every student. In the best case, having a brilliant tutor allows a student to create a pathway and a future in a…

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is being able to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of your students with pinpoint accuracy, in order to holistically improve their attributes as a learner, as well as balance encouragement with criticism, to make sure that students are simultaneously confident and grounded. A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure the student clearly understands the topic, not just memorises it. It's about helping them build real confidence so that when they answer questions, whether in class or in exams, they're not second-guessing themselves. That means breaking things down in a way that actually makes sense…

Its a very open question in my point of view but, if I want to say it as brief as I can its backing them up making them reach a certain level and then teaching them how to fish instead of just giving them fish and when they learn how to fish giving them tips for catching bigger fish. A tutor should not just solve a question for a student, rather they need to supply the foundations and processes that allow a question to be broken down and solved easily. A tutor should also be able to connect to students, rather than having a purely academic relationship, the students need to feel comfortable they can ask questions and also…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them completely understand the material. Not only so that they can do a specific question, the important thing is for them to understand the concept, so when they encountered different kind of question, they would know how to approach it. Furthermore, a tutor must adjust…

Inside HighettTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Liam worked on algebra basics and worded questions, using step-by-step examples to strengthen his problem-solving approach.

For Year 10, Jasmine practised expanding and factorising quadratic expressions and revisited linear equations through homework review.

Meanwhile, in VCE Physics (Year 12), Alex prepared for SAC 1 by applying key concepts from motion and forces, focusing on calculations relevant to assessment requirements.

Recent Challenges

For a Year 10 student, he needs to improve his answer layout—how he writes answers on paper, as one tutor observed; unclear working made reviewing linear equations much harder.

In Year 11 Science, missing key notes and not summarizing lessons left gaps before assessments.

One Year 8 student relied on quick mental shortcuts in algebra but skipped writing steps, leading to lost marks when sign errors appeared.

A Year 4 learner often forgot their maths book at home, so practice with time-telling was inconsistent—confidence dipped each time progress stalled mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Highett tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip over worded maths problems now taking the time to highlight key details and draw diagrams before solving, which led him to finish several expansion and factorisation questions without any errors.

In another session, a Year 9 student who was hesitant about trigonometry started identifying patterns in angle problems on his own and applied rules from previous lessons with much more independence.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student made a clear leap by remembering both o'clock and half-past positions when telling time and even corrected herself mid-task when counting by fives.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Highett Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Moorabbin Primary School.
