I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

The most important thing that a tutor for students is to allow them to work out answers for themselves. Of course, tutors should provide guidance, but they should not merely provide answers. Additionally, I feel that students must be allowed room to make mistakes. A tutor should not be one to apply too much pressure on a student, as too much force…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for their student is remaining patient and continue to persevere with the content. In my experience, if I didn't understand a concept or was struggling with a question, it was extremely helpful when my tutor continued to talk me through the topic and didn't get frustrated at me for not…

The most important things a tutor can do is to tailor their lessons to suit their individual students as every student learns differently and has different learning needs. It is also important that the tutor has knowledge on the curriculum that the student is being taught at school so they can align what they teach what the student is learning at…

Tutors serve a distinct role from teachers and parents, putting them in a unique position to assist learners. Personal relationships are crucial to student achievement; the more attached a student feels to his or her tutor, the more trust and respect the tutor instils in the student, both of which are necessary ingredients for effective learning.…

The most important things a tutor can offer is ongoing support, record of the student’s growth and achievements, providing help outside of what the student already is aware of, treating them as an individual who is already capable and just needs a little help in unlocking their abilities and lastly help students set and meet their long term and…

I think that curiosity and the satisfaction of that curiosity is the most enjoyable part of learning. Whilst students have different goals for their learning the tutor has an opportunity to impact a life positively. The most important thing is to achieve the student's goal but over and above that a tutor can engender a love of learning that will…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is a) be consistent and persistent - constantly show up, be willing to explain things 100 times if that's what is needed. The student needs to have faith in you. And b) build confidence - tutoring isn't a short term option, by teaching them the skills of how to attack problems they don't understand,…

A tutor should not be someone who forces children to study. He or she should be a good friend, mentor for every child. He or she should be able to show patience and empathy to her students and stand with them in achieving their dreams. As a tutor, my major strengths are good communication skills and patience. I strongly want my students to…

Make them realise that they have the ability to acheive, and helping them unlock that in themselves. My strengths would be in relating to the students, as I am recently out of high school, and understanding how the new SACE system works. My weakness would possibly be with younger children, as it has been a while since I was in the younger years,…

Inside HillbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Kody focused on multiplication facts and strategies for solving money word problems.

In Year 10, Lorry worked through linear programming—identifying constraints in real-world problems and graphing feasible regions—and also practised trigonometry, especially using the cosine rule to find triangle areas.

For Year 11, Lucy reviewed chemistry topics like intermolecular forces and polarity as they relate to alcohols, and tackled statistics concepts such as discrete random variables by working through initial lesson notes after an absence.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on algebraic manipulation left several expressions unsimplified, which made later steps much harder—she often leaves obviously unsimplified expressions as they are, which then makes later parts of the problem difficult.

In a senior Maths session, one student forgot their calculator and struggled with complex arithmetic, limiting practice on standard deviation calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided showing working for worded problems out of uncertainty and lost confidence after small setbacks. This hesitation led to missed learning opportunities when tackling trigonometry and surface area tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hillbank recently saw Lucy, a Year 12 student, move from hesitating over chemical test procedures to independently preparing a full report outline and confidently identifying compound types.

Meanwhile, Lorry in Year 10 has started taking the lead in English by drafting nearly entire paragraphs on his own after initially needing step-by-step guidance—he now brings his own ideas and asks for help only when truly stuck.

In primary years, Alice's sessions have shifted from constant support with addition to her tackling multiplication questions mostly solo and asking for help only when she really needs it.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Playford Civic Centre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Salisbury Heights Primary School.
