I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, simplify the learning process, and cultivate a supportive environment where they feel safe to ask questions. There are many intelligent tutors out there, but a great tutor goes beyond just teaching content; they help shape a student’s independence,…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is make their teaching environment comfortable. I believe students learn best if they are easy and able to talk and more importantly ask questions when they are unsure. Without this transparency I believe it’s very hard to teach and fully understand our students…

I think the most important tasks for a tutor is to push their students to broaden their mind, their perspectives on the subject. I would want my students to be thinking learners and not followers. A good state of mind is always important for students especially in Mathematics, where sometimes u just have to keep trying with the right methods to…

In my point of view, the main issue is that the student do not understand about their own problems. As a tutor, I must illustrate them what they are lagging in, and should gradually remove the knowledge or skill gap. A tutor should be a friendly person whom a student can communicate his problems. students usually copy the tutor styles to solve…

I believe encouragement, repetition and clarification of syllabus points are things that a tutor can focus on, in which will greatly improve the confidence and results of the student. I have just recently graduated high school and thus share common experiences with the current students, I believe this as an advantage as I can guide and mentor my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to adapt their approach to suit the student's individual needs. Every student learns differently, so a tutor should be flexible in how they explain concepts, adjust the pace, and use methods that match the students' learning style. By meeting students at their level and adapting…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to equip the student with the skills to find answers and explore the subject on their own. Whenever my students ask me questions outside of the syllabus, I involve them in the process of looking up papers and interpreting scientific language. I am able to come up with analogies to help students understand…

The power of being non-judgmental. A tutor must understand that every student has different learning capabilities and focus more on students that find it difficult to grasp concepts without belittling them. I believe I have two strengths as a tutor- 1. I do not follow the status quo/ set pattern of teaching. I like to mix things up so that my…

I believe the most important things that a tutor can do it not only explain how to answer a problem, but also why it is done in this way. They break down the entire learning process into small steps that can be honed and practiced, leading to more achievable improvement. Strictly in terms of ATAR, to help students do and understand past exams so when the real exams come, they would feel less stressed and more "at home" with the topics being examined, whilst being able to manage time well due to them having done similar past exam questions as routine. But in terms of tutoring, actually helping the student…

Inside HiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby revised division strategies, focusing on inverse operations and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 using the written method.

For Year 5, Ashton worked through fractions with different denominators as well as decimal addition and subtraction.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ella practised measurement conversions between kilograms and grams along with regular mental maths exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student faced confusion completing a fraction number line revision sheet, as noted: "there was some question on how to complete it," and did not seek clarification from their teacher—this hesitation delayed progress.

In Year 10 maths, another student needed repeated reminders to check working out, especially when handling area calculations for irregular shapes; missed steps led to incorrect answers that went unnoticed until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner avoided verbalising column values during addition tasks, which made it harder to spot mistakes and slowed development of place value understanding.

Each scenario left students less confident heading into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Hilton tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to rush through maths problems is now double-checking subtraction answers by adding back, catching mistakes before moving on.

In another session, a Year 7 student—who'd previously guessed at fraction questions—successfully simplified different types of fractions without prompting and explained the process aloud.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read out loud completed an entire reading comprehension passage with only minimal help and answered all follow-up questions independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hilton Primary School.
