It is most important to make the student enjoy the lesson in a way that they would not think of it as obligatory but rather make the students truly want to learn. Also, a tutor should acknowledge the students hard work and struggles, not only their high results. I am very patient since all children have different speeds when it comes to learning.…

Provide adequate motivation and encouragement. A tutor is only half responsible for the student's progress, and the student is responsible for the other half through their own work and perseverance. It is therefore crucial that a tutor teaches not only content, but also good work ethic to a student by encouraging and motivating them to work hard…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their problem solving skills. Regardless of subject, the ability to assess a problem, devise a strategy, execute said strategy and re-assess it if need be is a major life skill that will help a student in their academic career and beyond. I think that I am very good at meeting the…

I believe the most important things a tutor can provide are motivation and discipline. I might not be the smartest tutor, but I’m there to accompany my students, help them trust themselves, remind them of their goals, and keep them disciplined in their studies whenever they feel lost. It’s not about how fast they progress but about the…

Tutoring is a noble occupation. My experience with the previous tutoring has taught me many things that can be really important for a student. Not every child is able to cope with his/her studies and routine. Being a student of Psychology, I prefer encouraging and motivating them to do better each day. Some students tend to trigger their fear of…

Aside from teaching the content in an understandable and logical manner, I also think that a tutor should try to inspire a student to become a self-directed and motivated learner. Such a transformation creates the best performing students because they no longer overly rely on the tutelage of others. Rather, they learn to handle a variety of…

I think the best tutors teach at a speed that the student requires. If a tutor is impatient, not only does it reduce what the student learns but also discourages them from asking for help. Tutors need to accommodate each specific student, as each one is different. I have been studying for a Bachelor of Law/Arts for the past four years. This study…

An important thing a tutor can do for the student is help shape his/her persona by providing academic guidance, human consistency and a personal connection. My strength lies in my ability to understand my student on a more personal level. With my great communication skills which helps me build a rapport with the student and adapt to their needs.…

It is important for a tutor to be knowledgeable in their content and pass this onto their student in a manner that is easy to understand. I also believe that it is important to get to know the specific strengths and weaknesses of their student so that they can help to turn the weaknesses into strengths, as well as reinforcing the strengths.…

Tutors should execute multiple duties to ensure students' needs are met exceptionally. One duty includes building interpersonal relationships with students and creating a supportive environment so that learners will feel comfortable and encouraged to engage in lessons. Tutors should also have a solid grasp of the concepts being taught. Expertise…

Inside Hope IslandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava worked through multiplying tens and hundreds as well as division with decimals using her year-level text, plus completed a spelling practice from random words in her book.

In Year 10, Josh focused on preparing for his General Maths assignment and used a tool to practise rearranging equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily reviewed feedback on her English assignment draft and refined the content by editing sections according to her task sheet.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Biology student struggled to organise notes for a dense unit on metabolism; as one tutor noted, "breaking down objectives into flashcards and converting them into questions helped clarify revision."

In Year 10 Maths, a student found it difficult to distinguish between method, results, and discussion sections in reports—often not showing steps when rearranging equations, making feedback less effective.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student repeatedly left homework and materials at school, missing out on spelling practice and task completion. These lapses in organisation or process made learning slower and led to extra time spent catching up instead of progressing.

Recent Achievements

A Hope Island tutor noticed Holly, a Year 11 student, took the initiative to contact her biology teacher for extra feedback on a challenging question and achieved an A in both maths and biology after consistently applying teacher and tutor suggestions—an impressive step up from her last results.

Meanwhile, Kirsty in Year 10 has become much more comfortable using literary devices independently in her creative writing, drawing on feedback and reading fiction to build richer characters; she recently scored 20/25 on her essay, surpassing her previous mark.

In Year 4, Jack volunteered to be timed for his compound words activity and completed it in under 16 seconds—his fastest yet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Upper Coomera Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coombabah State School.
