Personally, a tutor is someone outside of school who the student can rely on for their studies. Students show their vulnerability here so that tutor can build them to be strong at school. So a tutor can help the student be strong on their subjects and understand the subject with life. Understanding the student on what they need first and being…

I always find people learn best when they're comfortable and truly believe they can master the concept. A tutor should be able to assess and listen exactly to students' hardships in the subject. From there, build on ways to simplify the issue. With mathematics, I think what is most important is to simplify the way of solving problems as much as possible. Another important feature that a tutor can do is to build a friendly relationship with students…

A tutor, fundamentally, serves a purpose to give the student additional knowledge or hone their pre existing knowledge. To achieve this, not only academic aptitude is highly pivotal, a strong and individual-catered means of transferring said intelligence is vital. This is one of the factors which differ classroom teachers from tutors as they are…

Inside HorsleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Cailyn worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and operations with fractions, including combining like terms.

In Year 9, Daniel focused on applying Pythagoras' theorem to word problems and reviewing financial mathematics topics such as taxes and simple interest.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Nicholas tackled right-angled triangle trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA) and practiced solving non-right-angled triangle problems using the sine rule.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student "kept most of the working in her head," which made it difficult to spot errors with negative signs and slowed her progress in linear equations.

In a Year 11 session, calculator use sometimes led to swapped values—putting a positive where a negative was needed—resulting in incorrect answers for graphing tasks.

A Year 7 student struggled to recall basic multiplication facts without referring back to notes, leading to frustration and frequent restarts during algebra practice.

When asked to read questions aloud or write out steps, another resisted, which left gaps in understanding multi-step word problems.

Recent Achievements

One Horsley tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to attempt challenging algebra but now independently reviews her notes and requests extra practice problems when unsure.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who often rushed through tasks has started carefully organising his work and double-checking answers for accuracy, showing new attention to detail that wasn't there before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to find subtraction daunting now tackles multi-step questions with persistence, recently solving a tricky problem independently without giving up or asking for immediate help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dapto District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dapto Public School.
