The most important things I can do for a student extend beyond imparting knowledge. I prioritize understanding each student's individual learning style, tailoring my approach to their needs. Building a positive and encouraging environment, I aim to instill confidence, foster critical thinking, and ignite a genuine passion for learning. It's not…

As a tutor, the most important thing I can do is to help the student figure out where their confusion is, is it just the question being asked or the logic of how to interpret this question. They may confuse about the original theory they've learned because they can't link it to real life to apply or they didn't see it clearly in the first place,…

I believe the most important thing is to make sure the student fully understands the knowledge, being able to use it in any situation, while enjoying the learning. It is when the student fully engages in their learning experience that the outcome can be fully maximised. I wish this upon all students, and I would love to be the mentor who guides…

The most important things that a tutor can build a personal and strong relationship with their students. Helping them with their learning progress not just only helping them doing their homework. Communication skills also play an important role, by communicating with their parents or guardian how to help the students in their learning process I…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are spark the student’s interest in the subject, explain concepts clearly when something doesn’t make sense, and help remove the fear of making mistakes. When students see that learning is a process of trying, experimenting and eventually finding the answer, they become more confident and open…

To help them understand the knowledge itself, instead of get high scores by constantly doing different types of questions. Truely understanding of knowledge is more efficient than practicing problem solving. I am very patient, when student cannot understand what I am saying, I will think of another way to explain it. And I am good at discovering…

Allow students to investigate something they cannot find without a tutor, this includes bringing new ideas and thoughts to students. Learning the methods not the question. I enjoyed teaching others and through out my teaching experience with my friends I gain a lot of experience on how to teach in a way that makes complex ideas easily understood.…

A tutor that actually are able to help the students improve in their weakest subject and help them learn to grasp the knowledge in the most effective way. Also guide and encourage them to the best of their ability, also teach them exam skills that are able to set them up for all exams in the future. Having enough patience and never give up even…

A tutor should not pressure students or else they may under perform. But instead with patience and acknowledging their flaws, one should be considerate with their skills levels and not force them too hard. Every student learns differently, so adapting methods to fit their strengths and preferences makes a big difference in effectiveness. I think I…

Inside Huntleys CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on subtraction with borrowing using the algorithm method for 2–4 digit numbers, and practiced rounding as well as identifying greater than and less than symbols.

Year 8 student Jess focused on algebra homework involving factorisation (including negatives), and revised circle formulas by distinguishing between radius and diameter for circumference.

For Imogen in Year 7, recent lessons addressed converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, plus multiplying and dividing fractions to build confidence for word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student often avoided writing out full working for maths—especially on simple addition or times tables—preferring to count on fingers or ask for reassurance after each step. As one tutor observed, "she checked with me after every answer, even when she was correct." This led to slow progress during quizzes and left her uncertain when working alone.

In contrast, a Year 10 student tackling algebraic word problems tended to skim over key details in questions, sometimes missing critical hints or misreading specifications. During exam practice, this resulted in lost marks and repeated confusion about what the question actually required.

Recent Achievements

One Huntleys Cove tutor noticed a Year 9 student who, after weeks of uncertainty, began using number lines and worksheets to finally tackle multiplying and dividing negative numbers on her own—she now moves on to linear equations.

In Year 11 maths, Jess has shifted from relying heavily on prompts to independently correcting minor errors in complex algebra questions; she even started asking for tougher problems without hesitation.

Meanwhile, a primary student who used to hesitate with times tables recently finished a worksheet of six times tables both in and out of order at full speed and with perfect accuracy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
