The most important thing I can do is help a student build real understanding, not just get them to the right answer for today's homework. That means being patient enough to find out exactly where their confusion starts, rather than assuming, and adjusting how I explain something until it genuinely makes sense to them rather than moving on too…

This means equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to tackle challenges on their own, fostering a growth mindset, and providing ongoing guidance and support as they navigate their educational journey As a…

Being patient and understanding. Not every student learns the same or is a carbon copy of the others. Treating the student with respect and understanding are essential to a positive experience for both the student and the tutor. A tutor must be able to build a students confidence, and not a dependence. For instance, lets say in physics, rather than teaching a student to memorise formula or answer, a good tutor will ensure the student understands the subject and how to apply it. This mindset is extremely crucial to building student confidence, and it stays in memory much…

A tutor should make the student feel comfortable about admitting the lessons that the student really doesn't understand, and eventually make that student feel confident by equipping her/him with methods to break down and analyse the problem in digestible steps. I firmly believe a tutor should not spoon feed a student; instead, let him/her attempt…

The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really good at…

Motivate and inspire: A good tutor should work to motivate and inspire their student, helping them to see the value and relevance of the subject matter and encouraging them to continue learning and growing beyond the tutoring session. This may involve sharing personal stories or examples of how the subject matter has impacted their own lives or…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. A lot of students actually understand more than they think, but they might be anxious, unsure, or afraid of making mistakes. So I see my role as creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. Another…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
