I believe tutors are catalysts. As someone who hit an academic rock bottom in Year 9, I can say that it took me a solid 2 years until I got to a very solid position (A* in mathematics). The main reason that the process took as long as it did, was due to me not having a tutor. The experience helped me realize how much faster I could've reached my…

The most important things that a tutor can do is to really invest their time and energy, to believe that the student potential to be successful and doing everything they can to assist the student to reach their full potential, that it is not always about the grades or scores, but rather focusing on helping the student to achieve and do the best…

A tutor can do many things, but the most important one is give their students the confidence to apply what they have learned to the best of their ability. You can guide a student through a dozen practice questions, but ultimately, it is more important that they see the work as approachable and not impossible to do by themselves. As a tutor I am…

Provide alternative ways to understand concept when students are finding difficulties in learning from them in school. As a tutor, I think some of my strengths are patience - a tutor must be patient with their student - a student is only as good as their teacher, under standing, and…

In my opinion, the most important quality of a tutor is flexibility. While the concepts are the same, our teaching methods, the way we deliver it to each students differs. We need to cater for each student's need and ability. The ultimate goal is to inspire the students and initiate them to challenge themselves. Since I've once struggled with…

I would say trusting students is one of the most important things. As a tutor, I believe in my students and their capability of achieving more. Exhibiting this trust, I am sure that students will feel encouraged and gain confident to work harder and become a better version of themselves. As a patient and optimistic person, I believe my strength in…

As a tutor, I encourage my students to truly understand the course material, rather than aimlessly memorize the content. To do this it is important to be supportive, but firm. Ultimately, I want to help my students recognize the potential within themselves. I graduated in 2019 with an ATAR of 99.00. I have tutored 14 students over 3 years. I am…

I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give the student guidance on how to deal with the problems and make them solve their problems in order for them to solve future problems by themselves. A tutor can also help them with the problems after they have tried to solve the problems with different techniques. My strengths as…

This question need to be discussed into two solutions. First, for the lower grade student, it is essential for them to build up their interest towards maths, which will help them to be better off in the future. On the other hand, for the student who are preparing for their VCE, the tutor should focus more how to improve their grade in order to get…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them that learning can be enjoyable, and not just a task. Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
